Healglobal has, over the years, worked alongside girls and boys, women and men to challenge harmful taboos and break barriers surrounding menstrual health and hygiene.

For today’s girls, transformation is being driven through shared knowledge, open conversations, and intergenerational dialogue once considered impossible between grandmothers, mothers, and daughters. Where silence once existed, there is now understanding, confidence, and belonging.

Together, we continue to create safe spaces where every girl and woman can experience menstruation with dignity, support, and pride.

On this Menstrual Hygiene Day, we are reminded that access to menstrual health education, menstrual products, and quality healthcare is not a privilege, but a fundamental necessity for the dignity, wellbeing, and empowerment of women and girls.

When menstrual health needs are adequately met, girls are more likely to remain in school, women can participate meaningfully in the workplace, and communities become healthier, more inclusive, and more equitable.

Today, we proudly join the global movement to break the silence surrounding menstruation, challenge harmful myths and stigma, and advocate for a world where no girl or woman is limited by her period.

A truly is one where menstrual health is prioritized, conversations are normalized, and every woman and girl has the support and resources needed to thrive with confidence and dignity.

A truly period-friendly world is one where menstruation never limits opportunity, confidence, or potential.

Imo Youth Advocates in collaboration with the Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, conducted advocacy visit to Most Rev. Moses Chikwe, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri and Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Imo State to strengthen faith-based collaboration to improve awareness, address vaccine hesitancy, and sustain HPV vaccination uptake among eligible girls, particularly those aged nine, while advancing the transition from campaign-based delivery to a routinized health service.

Key advocacy requests focused on leveraging church structures as trusted platforms for disseminating accurate HPV information, integrating sensitization into religious gatherings, and supporting school–health linkages for timely vaccination. The delegation also proposed youth-led mobilization initiatives, including a statewide awareness walkathon, to deepen grassroots engagement and expand community reach through faith networks.

The Bishop (CAN Chairman) expressed strong support, endorsing the project and committing to cascade advocacy messages across the five CAN blocs in Imo State. He also requested tailored IEC materials and structured sensitization sessions with YOWICAN and WOWICAN to address misinformation and improve understanding of HPV vaccination within church communities.

Alongside officials from the Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Imo State Youth Advocates, paid an advocacy visit to the Honourable Commissioner and Permanent Secretary of the Imo State Ministry of Education as part of efforts to strengthen school-linked delivery of HPV vaccination under the YIELD-HPVV Project.

The team presented key highlights from the state HPV vaccination data, noting both progress and existing gaps, particularly missed opportunities to reach eligible girls within school settings. Emphasis was placed on the unique position of the education sector as a consistent access point to girls aged nine, and the need to move beyond one-off campaigns to a structured, routinized system anchored in schools.

We asked the ministry to support the institutionalization of HPV vaccination within the school health framework. This includes issuing guidance to schools to cooperate with vaccination teams, supporting the identification and tracking of eligible girls, integrating HPV awareness into school activities, and strengthening coordination with health authorities for planned outreach. Additionally, we requested the Ministry’s support in mobilizing schools for upcoming awareness activities, including the statewide Big Event/walkathon.

In response, the Honourable Commissioner acknowledged the importance of protecting adolescent girls and expressed readiness to align the education sector with ongoing health interventions. The Permanent Secretary reinforced this position, committing to facilitate internal communication across school systems and encourage compliance at both public and private school levels.

Both stakeholders agreed to support stronger collaboration with the health sector, improve school-level participation, and promote HPV awareness within education structures.

Coordination is the missing link. Health cannot do it alone. Education cannot do it alone. Finance cannot do it alone. HPV vaccination succeeds when sectors plan, fund, and act together.

Imo State needs stronger cross-sector coordination to close financing gaps and sustain school-health delivery.

We’ve moved past the launch phase. The real question now is sustainability. If HPV vaccination is still treated as a donor-funded activity, progress will stall.

Imo State must transition fully to domestic financing now, not later. Every delay increases the risk of missed girls.

Systems need sustained investment. We cannot expect strong outcomes from weak systems. Cold chain gaps, limited supervision, and underfunded mobilization quietly undermine HPV delivery.

Policy stakeholders in Imo State must finance the full delivery system not just vaccine procurement because access is as important as availability.

Accountability builds trust. Communities trust what they can see. If funding is allocated, stakeholders should also see clear results, coverage, reach, and impact.

Imo State must ensure HPV financing is transparent, trackable, and performance-driven across the 27 LGAs.

Cervical cancer is preventable, but only if we act early and consistently. Delaying financing today creates higher health and economic costs tomorrow.

Imo State Government must prioritize HPV vaccination as a long-term state investment; protecting lives, families, and future productivity.
