It’s International Men’s Day!

A day to intentionally appreciate the men in our lives—those in our families, our circles, and our workplaces.

A day to intentionally remind them that they matter.

A day to intentionally remind them that they are seen.

MEN ARE HUMAN TOO.

They experience the same feelings we all do - love, joy, confusion, belonging, abandonment, depression… and everything in between.

While they may often appear as though they have it all figured out, there are times they are just clueless and would do well with some help and support for the weight to be taken off their shoulders.

So, may I ask one thing—men? Please, SPEAK UP WHEN YOU NEED HELP! (Yes, I had to shout that.)

Don’t suffer in silence. As I have seen a couple of instances this year.

Reach out for help.

Share your struggles with someone you trust or with a professional.

It is NOT a crime to speak up.

And it does NOT make you weak.

You have just this one life. This is not a rehearsal.

Seek help when you need it.

Get it off your chest.

There are many virtual support options available now, at the least, so you are without excuse. Your wellbeing matters.

Take charge of your life.

Stop blaming your past.

Speak up. Unlearn. Learn. Relearn.

Don’t let yesterday’s trauma hold you hostage from living a beautiful life today and tomorrow.

Life is beautiful, and you deserve to experience it fully.

Also, can we create more safe spaces for boys and men?

Spaces to share, to be heard, to learn, to heal, to mentor and be mentored —

In schools, churches, mosques, workplaces, communities, and online.

We need a better world. And as the song says, “All we need is love.”

MEN ARE HUMAN TOO.

So, let’s love them — not only today, but every day.

To every boy and man you meet,

BE KIND.

Today, on the International Day of the Boy Child, we reflect on the 2025 theme: ‘Building Self-Esteem in Boys: Stand Up, Be Heard, Be Seen.’

It’s widely acknowledged that society places many socio-cultural expectations on boys: "Boys should be tough," "Suck it up, you're a man," "You’re a boy, why are you crying?" These messages push boys to mask their struggles and emotions, living the ‘suffering and smiling’ charade, as Fela Anikulapo-Kuti rightly described. This forced masking continues into adulthood, where the emotional weights they carry — hidden and unaddressed — eventually become unbearable. They can manifest in harmful behaviors at work, in relationships, or in society at large, and sometimes, they are buried in addiction.

This is why it’s so important to focus on the boy child’s needs from a young age — to validate their fears, embrace their vulnerabilities, and correct negative behaviors while reinforcing positive ones. We must teach values like discipline, emotional intelligence, self-esteem, and encourage open, honest conversations that nurture authentic, well-rounded men.

Last November, during the Intergenerational Conversations on the Male Gender organized by Project Boys to Men, an initiative I am deeply passionate about and lead, several challenges faced by the boy child were identified. These include peer pressure, substance abuse, mental health struggles, inadequate parental care, lack of male-focused policies, and the tendency toward short attention spans, to name just a few. These are real issues, often hidden behind the facade of "macho" masculinity.

It’s time we created safe spaces and supportive environments for boys to speak openly about their challenges. These spaces should be grounded in mentorship, where older role models guide them, helping build confidence, self-esteem, and resilience. Initiatives like these are already making a difference — for instance, programs that focus on emotional intelligence, coping strategies, and positive masculinity.

Exactly a week ago, on Tuesday, 19th November 2024, the Intergenerational Conversations on the Male Gender was held at the Osogbo Window on America, Osun State as we celebrated the International Men's Day.

The programme organized by Project Boys to Men, an initiative of Treasure Jars Youth Centre, and a life and leadership skills development project for adolescent boys was held to discuss issues and challenges the male gender, including the boy child faces with a view to identifying tangible solutions to inform future interventions.

Key stakeholders across different generations (Gen Alpha, Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X and Baby Boomers) from various sectors, including education, health, civil society, faith, media, traditional institutions such as HRH Olori Kafayat Adedoyin Oyetunji, and cultural icons such as Chief Jimoh Buraimoh, the foremost African Bead Painter and Baale Gbodofon, and Chief Yemi Elebuibon converged for the discourse.

With an active online audience, challenges and issues identified during the hybrid programme include peer pressure, drug abuse and addiction, mental health issues, lack of policies to implement programmes in favour of the male gender, excessive use of social media and gadgets, having short attention span, and situational or deliberate lack of or inadequate parental care, to mention a few.

Some suggestions to address issues facing the male gender include:
- ensuring parental synergy in training the boy child
- parental and guardian awareness of trends and things catching the boy child’s fancy
- building confidence and self-esteem in the boy child
- intentional mentoring of the boy child
- creation of safe spaces for males to learn such as youth clubs for life skills building, and
- advocating political willingness in creating development programmes for the boy child.

We sincerely appreciate the key stakeholders and online audience for their active participation and valuable contributions at the programme. We also thank our sponsors and donors for their immense support in ensuring the success of the programme. Many thanks to the Project Boys to Men team. Well done 👍💕
