PRESS STATEMENT

Development Watch Network (DWN) Calls for Transparency, Accountability & Social Equity in Nigeria's Energy Transition Agenda.

Osogbo, Nigeria 16th September 2025

Development Watch Network (DWN) has emphasized the need for Energy Transition in Nigeria to be anchored on sound principles of public finance management, transparency, accountability, fiscal sustainability and social equity.

DWN reiterated its commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in the use of public resources, especially in the context of funding, subsidies and investments in energy transition's programs in Nigeria as well as climate change financing.

Executive Director of DWN, Abdulgaffar Akin, stated this in Abuja on the sideline of Civil Society/Media Roundtable on: "Building a Framework for Engagements on Cost and Impacts of Energy Transition on Nigeria Economy"

The Roundtable, held in Abuja on Tuesday 16th September 2025 was organized by the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) and funded by the Ford Foundation.

The event brought together critical stakeholders from civil society, media, and non-state actors to deliberate on inclusive strategies for addressing the social, economic, and fiscal implications of Nigeria’s energy transition agenda.

Participants at the event examined the importance of transparency, accountability, and stakeholder inclusiveness in the national dialogue on energy transition. The discussions highlighted the need for a clear, participatory framework that ensures that the voices of vulnerable communities and non-state actors are not left behind as Nigeria moves toward a low-carbon economy.

The roundtable concluded with a shared commitment among stakeholders to deepen collaboration, improve access to data, and advocate for policy reforms that promote just and inclusive energy transition processes in Nigeria.

Development Watch Network commends NEITI and the Ford Foundation for convening this timely engagement and looks forward to further collaboration with other stakeholders to ensure that the costs and benefits of Nigeria’s energy transition are equitably shared.
