REBUTTAL TO THE SPURIOUS AND MISLEADING PUBLICATION BY ETEOBONG NYONG INYANG ON THE THANK-YOU VISIT OF ORON UNION UYO BRANCH TO SIR VICTOR ANTAI, PhD

The leadership of Oron Union Uyo Branch has noted with concern a publication authored by Mr. Eteobong Nyong Inyang, which purportedly reports the recent thank-you visit of the Branch to Sir Victor Antai, PhD, Executive Director (Projects), Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Ordinarily, such a publication would not have warranted a response. However, the report is riddled with serious distortions, glaring omissions and misleading insinuations, making it necessary to clarify the true account of what transpired during the visit.

It is important to state from the outset that Mr. Eteobong Nyong Inyang is neither the Publicity Secretary nor the Secretary of Oron Union Uyo Branch, the officers constitutionally responsible for communicating the activities of the Branch to the public. His decision to unilaterally publish and circulate the report therefore represents an unfortunate intrusion into responsibilities outside his assigned portfolio.

For the avoidance of doubt, the visit of the Executive Committee of Oron Union Uyo Branch to Sir Victor Antai was purely a thank-you visit, aimed at appreciating his numerous developmental interventions and sustained commitment to the progress of Oro nation.

Regrettably, the publication in question ignored the central highlights and substantive outcomes of the visit, choosing instead to project narratives that were neither discussed nor reflective of the true purpose of the engagement.

Among the critical facts conspicuously omitted from the publication are the following:

1. Redemption of ₦10 Million Building Pledge: Sir Victor Antai redeemed his earlier ₦10 million pledge towards the construction of the Oron Union Complex in Uyo, a landmark project intended to strengthen the institutional presence of the Union.

2. Additional ₦21 Million Contribution from Friends and Associates: Friends and associates of Sir Victor Antai who were present during the visit were inspired by the vision of the project and collectively donated an additional ₦21 million in support of the building project.

3. Commitment to Continue Supporting the Project: Sir Victor Antai further pledged to continue contributing to the project until its successful completion, demonstrating his sustained commitment to Oro institutional development.

4. Sponsorship of 675 JAMB Forms and Career Counselling: The publication also failed to acknowledge the significant educational intervention by Sir Victor Antai through the sponsorship of 675 JAMB registration forms and intensive career counselling for indigent Oro students who could not afford the registration fees but were interested to develop themselves educationally

5. Scholarship Pathway for Outstanding Students: It was also stated that top-performing students among the JAMB beneficiaries will be recommended to the Oro Educational Foundation, chaired by Rev. Patrick Grace Henry, for further scholarship opportunities and educational sponsorship.

6. Adoption of “Catch Them Young” Development Philosophy: Sir Victor Antai explained that this initiative forms part of a broader youth development strategy he described as “Catch Them Young,” aimed at nurturing the intellectual and professional capacity of Oro youths from an early stage.

7. NDDC Transmission Station Project for Oro Nation: The publication equally ignored the important disclosure that the NDDC, through the facilitation of Sir Victor Antai, is building a transmission station intended to permanently address the long-standing electricity supply challenges in Oro nation.

8. Provision and Upgrade of Transformers Across Oro Nation: Also omitted was the fact that Sir Victor Antai has facilitated the installation of several new transformers and the upgrading of existing ones across communities in Oro nation, aimed to significantly improve electricity distribution in the area.

9. Clarification of Political Position: Contrary to the impression created in the publication, Sir Victor Antai did not endorse the Deputy Governor during the visit. His remarks simply indicated that his responsibility is to support the re-election of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Governor Umo Eno, in line with his broader political commitments. The author couldn't put it explicitly that the EDP corrected the erroneous impression being carried by agents of blackmail that he is lobbying for the office of the Deputy Governor. The worthy Knight clearly said his interest is to use the current office he is occupying to help his people and that is all. He concluded that people should stop using his name for cheap political antics.

10. Advice to Oro Youth on Educational Direction: During the engagement, Sir Victor Antai also admonished Oro youths to prioritise professional and specialised courses in universities, stressing that such educational focus remains the surest pathway to securing a stronger and more prosperous future for Oro nation. It was also not reported.

11. Encouragement to Commence the Laying of the Foundation for Oro House in Uyo: Sir Victor Antai further urged the leadership of the Branch to commence in earnest the laying of the foundation for the proposed Oro House in Uyo, emphasising that the project would strengthen unity, coordination and institutional presence of Oro people resident in the state capital.

12. Advocacy for Justice and Inclusiveness in Oro Leadership: He also emphasised the need for justice, fairness and inclusiveness among all sections of Oro nation, particularly noting that Udung Uko Local Government Area has long been denied opportunity to represent Oro in the national assembly, noting that Oron Local Government Area has been there for 5 times, including senate and the house of representatives.

13. Lighting up of the Oron Union Complex in Uyo and it's environs: the exported failed to capture the encomium poured on Dr Victor Antai for his magnanimity in lighting up of the Oron Union Complex and its environs which has made the area a safe haven for businesses and social activities

It is therefore deeply regrettable that a visit rich in developmental support, educational empowerment initiatives, institutional advancement and constructive dialogue on the future of Oro nation was reported in a manner that ignored these significant contributions while promoting unrelated speculation.

The leadership of Oron Union Uyo Branch therefore dissociates itself entirely from the said publication and urges members of the public to treat it as an inaccurate and incomplete account of the visit.

Oron Union Uyo Branch remains committed to truthful communication, responsible leadership, and the continued pursuit of unity, justice and development for Oro nation.

Earlier today, the International President of the Women’s Wing of Oron Union, Mrs. Kate Hensley, paid a solidarity visit to the President General, Esang Nsa Bassey, KJW and members of his cabinet.

In an atmosphere warmed by mutual respect and the shared destiny of the Oro nation, Mrs. Hensley reaffirmed the loyalty of the women of Oro to the leadership of the Union. With eloquence both graceful and firm, she pledged that the women would remain steadfast pillars beneath the roof of the Union, committed to its unity, dignity, and progress.

Seizing the moment with admirable candor, she also presented two earnest requests on behalf of the women: the provision of a fully furnished kitchen to support their communal activities, and the allocation of a suitable site for the construction of a Women Development Centre, a sanctuary of empowerment where the aspirations of Oro women may be nurtured into tangible progress.

Responding with characteristic generosity and statesmanship, the President General assured the delegation that their requests would not fall on barren soil. By the grace of God, he pledged to see these aspirations realized, even if the path requires him to draw from his personal resources.

Thus, in that brief yet meaningful encounter, promise met purpose, and the future of the women of Oro found renewed hope in the covenant of responsible leadership.

Political Leadership or Political Capture?

A Forensic Examination of Equity, Representation, and Power in Oro Nation

Political memory is not ornamental; it is evidentiary. And in democratic systems, particularly within Nigeria’s intensely competitive and often predatory political environment, evidence matters.

The Book of Judges records that when Israel drifted, Deborah rose not merely as a symbolic woman in authority but as a jurist anchored in established moral order. Her leadership was corrective, not acquisitive. She judged according to “ancient landmarks.”

Oro Nation must now interrogate whether its own landmarks are being preserved, or quietly dismantled.

For over three decades, Oro people have invested trust, votes, legitimacy, and goodwill in one individual; Senator Akon Eyakenyi.

Her rise is not disputed. From auxiliary primary school teacher to local government supervisor, state board member, state executive council member, state board chairman, federal minister, again state board chairman, senator representing Akwa Ibom South, and now Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, her political résumé is extensive and verifiable.

But longevity in office is not synonymous with justice in office.

Oro did not stumble into elevating her. The deputy governorship was neither wrestled nor begrudgingly conceded; it was conferred with communal endorsement. This is significant in a political culture where female leadership at that level remains relatively rare. Oro demonstrated progressiveness.

However, progressiveness loses credibility when equity collapses.

Since the inception of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic in 1999, Oro Nation has operated an informal but observable rotational logic concerning the House of Representatives seat for Oron Federal Constituency. The five LGAs; Mbo, Okobo, Oron, Urue-Offong/Oruko, and Udung Uko, form the constituency.

Historical representation records are clear:

Mbo LGA

Six representatives:

Chief O. J. Eminue
Barr. E. I. Nkereuwem
Chief Martins Effiong
Sir E. R. Isang
Major Ita Essang
Hon. Nse Ekpenyong

Okobo LGA

Five representatives:

Chief Effiong Ononokpono
Chief Okon Ekwedung
Engr. Joe Bassey
Rt. Hon. Barr. Peter Linus Umoh
Hon. Robinson Uwak

Oron LGA

Seven representatives:

Senator Dr. Esin Anwana Esin
Senator Victor Akan
HRM Ahta Inyang Effiong Nyong
Hon. Spencer Esin
Senator Nelson Effiong
Senator Akon Eyakenyi
Rep Martins Esin

Urue-Offong/Oruko LGA

Three representatives:

Comrade Edet Bassey Etienam
Hon. Okon Bassey Etienam
Rt. Hon. Dr. Esio Owuong Udo

Udung Uko LGA
Zero representatives.

Not one.

This is not rhetorical exaggeration. It is statistical reality.

Udung Uko LGA remains the only Oro Nation local government area yet to produce a National Assembly representative since 1959.

Meanwhile, Oron LGA, the Deputy Governor’s home base, has produced seven federal representatives and, between 2015 and 2023, dominated the Oron/Udung Uko State Constituency across key political positions, including:

The State House of Assembly seat
National Assembly representation
Commissioner portfolios
Board memberships, and
Other executive appointments

The pattern is visible. It is measurable. It is defensible only if equity is no longer the guiding principle.

When one LGA consistently dominates federal, state legislative, and executive representation within a rotational framework that historically emphasized balance, political analysts no longer call it coincidence. They call it consolidation.

While serving as Senator for Akwa Ibom South, and leveraging her influence as a former Federal Minister, Senator Akon Eyakenyi secured the Deputy Governorship position, with the backing and endorsement of the Oro people.

That, in itself, is not unlawful.

However, the fact that she further influenced the imposition of Rep. Martins Esin for the House of Representatives seat in 2023, effectively short-circuiting Udung Uko’s opportunity, speaks to a troubling concentration of political leverage.

In systems where internal party democracy is weak, influence functions as power. And power without restraint produces exclusion.

As 2027 approaches, rather than initiating corrective balancing, reports indicate active discouragement of Udung Uko aspirants. The alleged cautioning of Engr. Bobby Onofiok against contesting the House of Representatives seat illustrates a climate of political intimidation rather than inclusion.

If accurate, this signals not leadership but gatekeeping.

At 64, an age often associated globally with statesmanship and legacy consolidation, the optics of continued positional accumulation raise legitimate questions about distributive justice within Oro’s political ecosystem.

Leadership matures when it transitions from acquisition to arbitration.

Oro’s identity is deeply tied to fairness. The federal seat has historically rotated because the people understood a simple truth; representation must circulate to preserve unity.

If Oron LGA seeks to retain the House of Representatives seat again in 2027, then equity logically requires relinquishing another major political position, most reasonably, the deputy governorship, to Udung Uko.

This is not hostility. It is equilibrium.

If both positions remain concentrated within one LGA, the moral argument for rotational justice collapses entirely.

The responsibility now transcends local maneuvering.

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, particularly:

His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, PhD
His Excellency Dr. Godswill Akpabio, GCON

must ensure that party structures do not become instruments of structural exclusion.

Oro unity is not sustained by dominance. It is sustained by fairness perceived and fairness practiced.

Udung Uko’s political suffocation is neither invisible nor imaginary. It is documented in representation data spanning beyond twenty-five years of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

Nigeria’s democracy is often described as transactional and predatory, where incumbency advantages, patronage networks, and influence hierarchies frequently override internal equity.

Oro Nation must decide whether it will replicate that pattern internally or resist it.

The test of leadership is not how firmly one holds power, but how responsibly one redistributes opportunity.

Martin Luther King Jr. warned that injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere. In microcosm, Udung Uko represents that warning.

If Oro cannot guarantee fair representation among five LGAs, it weakens its moral claim in broader state and national negotiations.

This is not a gender issue.
It is not an age issue.
It is not an anti-progress argument.

It is a governance issue.

When one LGA accumulates:

Deputy Governorship
Dominant federal representation
Legislative seats
Executive appointments

while another remains perpetually excluded from the National Assembly, the question is no longer political strategy, it is distributive justice.

Power can be used to correct imbalance.
Or to entrench it.

History will record which path was chosen.
