Chikwem Foundation Commemorates 10th Annual Agnes Chikwem Girls Achievement Awards in Onitsha

ONITSHA, ANAMBRA – The Chikwem Foundation, in collaboration with the Ladies of St. Mulumba, St. Mary’s Sub Council, Onitsha, successfully convened the 10th edition of the Agnes Chikwem Girls Achievement Awards. The ceremony recognized five exceptional students from Washington Memorial Grammar School for their academic and personal accomplishments.

Held on 12 May 2026, the milestone event honored the enduring legacy of the late Mrs. Agnes Chikwem, a pioneering advocate for gender equality, education, and holistic personal development. The awards served to spotlight academic excellence, exemplary leadership, and significant community impact among young women, furthering Mrs. Chikwem’s mission to empower the next generation of female leaders.

The keynote address was delivered by distinguished educationalist Mrs Veronica Nwabundo Ejiamike. Mrs. Ejiamike, a veteran educator and former Head of Department with over 30 years of expertise in the Nigerian secondary education sector, shared insights drawn from her extensive career and her academic background at Ahmad Bello University. As a multilingual professional fluent in Igbo, Yoruba, and English, she emphasized the importance of diverse perspectives in modern leadership.

Dr. Roy Chikwem, Co-Founder of the Chikwem Foundation reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to fostering the growth of principled and community-focused young women.

Chikwem Foundation Awards the 2025 Sir George Eluaka EmpowerHER Scholarships in Ibadan

The Chikwem Foundation is pleased to announce the successful presentation of the 2025 Sir George Eluaka EmpowerHER Scholarships to 20 deserving female students across two public secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The Sir George Eluaka EmpowerHER Scholarship is an annual initiative designed to empower young women through education while honouring the legacy of Late Sir George Ikechukwu Eluaka (1940–1996) — a man remembered for his integrity, humility, and lifelong service to humanity.

Born in Onitsha, Sir George devoted his life to public service, rising through the civil service to become Chief Auditor in the Enugu State Government. After retirement, he served as a Judge of the Juvenile Court in Onitsha, where his fairness and compassion left an enduring impact. His exemplary values of honesty, discipline, and dedication continue to inspire the Foundation’s work in advancing educational opportunities for young women.

This year’s Sir George Eluaka EmpowerHER Scholarship initiative was funded by RAC Migration and Education Services and Woody Point Medical Centre, whose generous support made it possible to reach and impact students across public secondary schools in Ibadan.

Imagine spending six years working hard to complete your secondary education, only to discover that financial hardship stands between you and the registration fees for your final qualifying examinations. For many bright and determined students, this moment can shatter dreams of completing their education. The Sir George Eluaka EmpowerHER Scholarship ensures that these young women can overcome such barriers allowing them to graduate with pride and pursue their aspirations, whether that means attending university, gaining vocational skills, or starting a trade.

Beyond the Sir George Eluaka EmpowerHER Scholarship initiative, the Chikwem Foundation also runs two other flagship programs that reflect its deep commitment to education, empowerment, and social progress. The Agnes Chikwem Girls Achievement Awards, held every April/May, recognises girls for outstanding academic excellence and leadership in their schools and communities. Meanwhile, the Women in Trade Microfinance Scheme, conducted in July and January each year, provides financial assistance and mentorship to women entrepreneurs seeking to grow sustainable businesses and uplift their families. Together, these programs underscore the Foundation’s belief that education and empowerment are not just opportunities but rights, essential pillars for building a more equitable and inspired society.

On 8th Feb 2025, Chikwem Foundation, in partnership with Ladies of St. Mulumba, St. Mary's Sub Council Onitsha, launched Batch A of the Women in Trade program—empowering five women with microfinance loans (60% non-repayable, 40% repayable) to support their businesses and economic independence.

On 20 July 2024, the Chikwem Foundation, in collaboration with the Ladies of St. Mulumba, St. Mary's Sub Council, Onitsha, took another significant step in advancing women's economic empowerment through the Chikwem Foundation's Women in Trade Microfinance Scheme. This initiative saw the empowerment of five more women by providing them with targeted loans to expand and strengthen their existing businesses.

The scheme is uniquely structured to address the financial challenges often faced by women entrepreneurs. Notably, 40% of the loan amount was allocated as a non-repayable grant, a gesture that underscores the Foundation's commitment to easing the financial burden on these women and enabling them to focus on the growth of their enterprises. The remaining 60% of the loan was structured as a repayable amount, ensuring that the scheme remains sustainable and can continue to support more women in the future.

This dual approach not only provides immediate financial relief but also fosters a sense of responsibility and ownership, encouraging the beneficiaries to invest wisely and contribute to the revolving nature of the fund. The partnership with the Ladies of St. Mulumba further highlights the importance of community collaboration in driving social and economic progress, particularly in supporting women in trade.

On 22 May 2024, the Chikwem Foundation, in partnership with the Ladies of St. Mulumba, St. Mary's Sub Council, Onitsha, successfully hosted the 8th Agnes Chikwem Achievement Awards. This annual event, established in memory of the late Mrs. Agnes Chikwem, continues to honour her legacy as a passionate advocate for girls' empowerment and education. The awards ceremony celebrated the remarkable achievements of girls in academics, with a focus on recognizing exceptional skills, leadership, and innovation. This year, five outstanding students from Ado Girls’ Secondary School, Onitsha, were honoured for their exemplary commitment to excellence.

The highlight of the event was an inspiring keynote address by Lady Dr. Stella Epundu, a distinguished educationist, and former Local Government Administrator. Her journey from a dedicated teacher to a prominent public servant and community leader resonated deeply with attendees. Lady Dr. Epundu's contributions to education, public service, and community development have left an indelible mark, and her speech was a beacon of inspiration for all present. In November 2023, a significant collaboration unfolded between the Chikwem Foundation and the Ladies of St. Mulumba, St. Mary's Sub Council in Onitsha, Nigeria. Dr. Roy Chikwem, JP, the Executive Director of the Chikwem Foundation, and Lady Ejiamike Veronica Nwabund, the President of the Ladies of St. Mulumba, St. Mary's Sub Council, respectively, played pivotal roles in representing their organizations during the formal signing of the agreement. The result was a two-year partnership agreement designed to bring about positive change through the implementation of the Chikwem Foundation Women’s Microfinance Scheme and the Agnes Chikwem Girls Achievement Awards.

On 13 January 2024, during their monthly meeting, the Ladies of St. Mulumba, St. Mary's Sub Council in Onitsha, Nigeria, carefully selected five deserving women to be the inaugural beneficiaries of the Women’s Microfinance Scheme. The Chikwem Foundation Women’s Microfinance Scheme was established in 2019 and has previously been implemented through the Rotary Club of Ibadan-Akobo (2019-2021) and the Catholic Women’s Organization St James Ibadan (2022-2023). This initiative is tailored to empower women by providing them with financial resources to invest in their existing businesses.

During the ceremony, each of the selected women received a well-structured loan, a critical component of the microfinance scheme. Notably, 40% of the loan amount was designated as non-repayable, reflecting a commitment to easing the financial burden on the recipients. Meanwhile, the remaining 60% of the loan was structured as repayable, ensuring a sustainable cycle for the scheme.

The significance of the event extends beyond the immediate impact on the five women; it serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for the broader community. By fostering entrepreneurship and financial independence among women, the partnership between the Chikwem Foundation and the Ladies of St. Mulumba is poised to catalyze positive social and economic change.

Looking ahead, the collaboration is set to continue its transformative work, with the second batch of beneficiaries scheduled to receive support in July 2024. This phased approach underscores the commitment to a sustainable and enduring impact, emphasizing the long-term success of the Women’s Microfinance Scheme and the Agnes Chikwem Girls Achievement Awards.
