THEMIS FOUNDATION RECORDS ANOTHER WIN.

The Themis Foundation has secured another important victory, the release from prolonged detention of a young man in his early twenties.

This lad was in the enterprise of sourcing discarded subterranean metal and iron scrap, known in local slang as ‘iron condemned.’ He sold these to buyers for meagre sums, which nevertheless put bread and water on his bed room floor.

At some point - probably inevitably - he became entangled in a dispute with the landlord of the land that he exploited. During the altercation, law enforcement was called to the scene.

The law officers attempted to arrest him, while he tried in vain to explain that he e the we was ignorant of the trespass nature of his habit. Ignorance being no defense in these matters, the officers insisted on apprehending him, which was fair enough.

In the altercation that ensued however, he mistakenly caused one of the officers, who fell to the ground, while trying to extricate himself from his grip. This shifted the entire narrative from trespass to alleged assault of a law officer.

The young man was ultimately subdued forcefully and taken into custody. He was subsequently made to understand that he could negotiate his way out of detention with some bail and a solvent surety, both of which he could not muster.

This was how he became a virtually forgotten fixture in the prison cell since last year, and with no court arraignment arranged.

The Themis Foundation stands against unlawful detention and prolonged incarceration without trial. We believe that no one should spend more time in jail than legally necessary, or be imprisoned without ever having their day in court. Justice must be timely, fair, and accessible to all.

THEMIS FOUNDATION deliberated carefully before intervening, not wishing to generate any untoward misunderstanding with the Police echelon, with which we have a considerably cordial and mutually respectful relationship, in our line of work.

We have been handling very complex and sensitive cases lately, many of which are still in court. This win is both timely and deeply encouraging. It reminds us why we do this work, and strengthens our resolve to keep fighting for justice.

For over a year, this young mother of two endured the harsh reality of prison for a crime she did not commit. Her story is one of heartbreak and injustice.

She lived in a one-bedroom space she rented in the boys’ quarters of a house in her village. In October 2023, her husband, who constantly abandoned her for months and abused her, came to visit after a period of abandonment. Apparently, thier marriage was riddled with problems, and she moved away from their former home and found this new place for her and her two children. She hawked fresh fruits every day to make ends meet. This man suddenly began to call her, and begged her to let him visit her and the kids, that he had changed. She fell for the pattern, and sent her address. So this man who didn’t care what happened to his family for months, came and stayed until December 2023. When she traveled with her children to spend the holidays at her grandmother’s home, everything seemed normal.

But after Christmas day, her world fell apart. Police arrived at her grandmother’s home and arrested her, accompanied by tenants from her compound. Her husband had allegedly broken into the main house, and stolen valuable items, but when he couldn’t be found, they took her instead. Her only ‘crime’ was being the one who had rented the room and invited him into her home.

Since then, she languished in prison, suffering not only the mental anguish of being separated from her children but also the physical toll of developing a painful skin disease due to the deplorable conditions. Meanwhile, her children remained with her aging grandmother, the only family they had left, broke, and distraught.

But today, thanks to the unwavering efforts of Themis Foundation, justice has finally prevailed. This young mother has been released, and she can now reunite with her children, seek treatment for her health, and begin to rebuild the life that was unjustly taken from her.

Ademola’s journey back to freedom has been bittersweet, a blend of new beginnings shadowed by deep loss. When Themis Foundation took him shopping for fresh clothes, arranged a bus ticket to take him home, and gave him some money to help him get started, he was stepping into a world that had changed during his absence. The economy was tougher, and life moved on without him. But what cut deeper than the challenges of finding his footing was the heartbreak that awaited him when he got home and went to visit his late wife’s family.

In their eyes, he had been absent during her last days, a loss they couldn’t bear, with all the pain she went through. Their grief boiled over, accusing him of abandoning her, with words as sharp as the pain he felt. They even fought him, and tore his clothes, a raw expression of their own loss and sorrow. But Ademola held on, pleading for understanding, offering his apologies to hearts too broken to listen. After a time, they found a small bridge of peace and together, they went to the mortuary, arranging the final farewell for the woman who had been the love of his life. She was finally laid to rest last week, closing a chapter on the sorrow that his absence had left behind.

Today, Ademola called our CEO, his voice full of gratitude and humility. He poured out his thanks, asking how he could ever repay her, knowing he had nothing tangible to give. Her response touched him deeply: “Just live in a way that makes me proud to have met you.” Overwhelmed, he promised her a gift from the heart, saying he would personally fry her some Ijebu garri—his hometown’s delicacy—as a humble but heartfelt gesture of his gratitude.

PRO BONO CASE POLICY:

Following our recent court victory in a pro bono case, I have received numerous requests from inmates seeking legal support. While we are deeply committed to justice, our focus is strictly on cases involving innocent individuals, those unlawfully incarcerated, or individuals whose time spent awaiting trial or hardships endured have exceeded the legal punishment for their offense. This is not a judgment of others’ circumstances, but rather a commitment to our mission. We do not accept pro bono cases for individuals who have committed crimes.

Thank you. 🙏

Today, Themis Foundation had the privilege of witnessing a moment that was three years in the making—a moment that carries the weight of loss, betrayal, and a painful journey toward redemption. This is the story of Adewale, a man whose life unraveled in a series of tragic events that began with a single mistake.

Adewale was once a hardworking but modest distributor, a loving father of three, and a husband trying to provide for his family. But like many, he made a wrong turn. He traveled to Imo State under the pretense of a work trip to Abuja, hiding the truth from his wife—he was visiting another woman he had met online. It was a trip that should have ended after a few days, but love, or something that felt like it, had a hold on him. His companion convinced him to take her on an impromptu trip to Lagos. They bought their bus tickets at the Onitsha park, unaware that fate had other plans. Full story in the comments.

An Injustice Righted: A Story of Humanity and Hope

Imagine being homeless, finding a place of refuge in an abandoned store, only to be wrongfully accused of destroying the very door that sheltered you. For almost a year, this was the harsh reality for one man—an innocent soul trying to survive. The accusation made no sense; why would he destroy the only place he could call home?

Yet, he was arrested, denied his freedom, and left to languish in jail for a full year without ever seeing a courtroom. His life was reduced to a number in the system, his humanity forgotten. But his story didn’t end there.

Themis Foundation stepped in when all hope seemed lost. They saw the person behind the case—a man who had been wronged by a system that should have protected him. Through their tireless work, they secured his freedom, offering their services pro bono.

This isn’t just a story of legal victory; it’s a reminder of our shared humanity. It’s about recognizing the dignity of every person, no matter their circumstances. Themis Foundation’s work shines a light on the importance of compassion, and their efforts have given this man not just his freedom, but a chance to reclaim his life. We shall go on to help set him as little as we can so he can move on with his life.
