Gender-Based Violence(GBV) Working Group Data Collation Workshop & 2025 Close-Out.

Today at the Ime Obi, the GBV Working Group came together for a focused working session with Resource Persons, Research Assistants, Village Coordinators, and Wellbeing Ambassadors.

We reviewed the GBV research study and theory of change, examined draft GBV policy documents, and aligned on a clear advocacy plan for engaging external stakeholders.

It was a practical, no-fluff session grounded in data, reflection, and forward planning, exactly what is needed to strengthen coordinated GBV response as we close the year.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, contributed thoughtfully, and stayed committed to the work.

This is how progress is built, one step at a time.

Earlier today, the ONAF Programme Coordinator, Enyi Chiebunigom Rita Melifonwu, held a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) community engagement meeting during a visit to the Onitsha Youth Council (OYC).

The session brought together GBV research coordinators, research assistants, and team leaders for an open discussion on the realities of gender-based violence in our community.

Participants were encouraged to
• Speak up and report abuses,
• Identify and document the different forms of violence, and
• Spread the message that GBV has no place in Onitsha.

The OnAF programme coordinator reaffirmed the commitment of His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, to stamp out gender-based violence across Onitsha. The meeting emphasized protection, awareness, and unity as essential tools in building a safer community for all.

The engagement was held at Ime Obi from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Together, we amplify the voices of survivors and strengthen the fight against GBV in Onitsha.

Day 7 of 16 Days of Activism
HRH Igwe Ralph Okolo stresses that every woman and girl deserves safety and dignity — in communities, research environments, and online spaces. He warns that rising cyberbullying, harassment, and cybercrime are serious violations, not trivial acts, and that any society that fails to protect its women and girls risks a disastrous future.
Digital Violence Is a Crime.
Online harassment, cyberstalking, threats, and sharing a woman’s image without consent are all punishable offenses under Nigerian laws such as:
🔹 Cybercrimes Act
🔹 VAPP Act
🔹 State Anti-GBV Laws
🔹 Child Rights Act (for minors)
Consequences for perpetrators include:
⚠️ Arrest
⚠️ Prosecution
⚠️ Fines
⚠️ Jail terms
Igwe Ralph Okolo reaffirms his commitment to speaking out and advocating for safer online and offline spaces.
Women and girls deserve protection, dignity, and justice.
Report. Speak out. Do not stay silent.

Day 7 of 16 Days of Activism | Digital Violence Is a Crime
Every citizen has a duty to stand for justice and protect the vulnerable. As Venerable Joseph Nweke (Chairman, CAN Anambra State) reminds us, preventing Gender-Based Violence is a moral duty and a sacred responsibility.
Today’s reminder is clear: Digital violence carries real-life consequences.
Online harassment, cyberstalking, threats, and sharing a woman’s image without consent are not harmless — they are criminal offences under Nigerian laws including the Cybercrimes Act, VAPP Act, state GBV laws, and the Child Rights Act.
Perpetrators can be arrested, prosecuted, fined, and jailed.
Women and girls deserve safety — online and offline.
Speak out. Report. Do not stay silent.

DAY 2 | 16 Days of Digital Safety Awareness

Digital safety is an important part of creating a positive online experience for everyone.
In his message for Day 2, Rev. Raymond Anoliefo highlights how online behaviours can impact the confidence and wellbeing of young people—especially girls navigating the digital world.

Today, we are sharing simple tips that can help promote safer online interactions:

For girls and young women:
• Be thoughtful about what you post online.
• Use strong passwords and privacy settings to protect your accounts.
• If something makes you uncomfortable, talk to someone you trust.

For boys and young men:
• Encourage positive and respectful communication online.
• Support your peers by promoting kindness and constructive conversations.

We can all contribute to a healthier digital space by discouraging harmful behaviours such as cyberbullying, negative comments, and misuse of personal information.

Watch the video to learn more about digital safety and share the message with someone who may find it helpful.

This message is brought to you by the South-East GBV Prevention Network, supported by the Ford Foundation.

Digital violence is evolving, and so must our response.
Women and girls deserve online spaces that protect, not harm.

As Ambassador Dr. Adulwaheed Odewale highlights, teaching digital empathy and strengthening online safety is essential. Collaboration is how we end digital violence together.

Let’s use our voices. Let’s take action.
There is no excuse for digital abuse.

16 Days. 16 Voices. One Fight: End Digital Violence Against Women & Girls.

This year, we’re spotlighting a form of abuse too easy to overlook: digital violence.
Cyberstalking, non-consensual image sharing, harassment, deepfakes, threats - these attacks are pushing women and girls out of the very spaces meant to empower them.

We stand with every young woman silenced, targeted, or afraid to log in.
With the South-East GBV Prevention Network, Ford Foundation, and our partners, we’re saying one thing clearly:

This violence must stop.

Safe digital spaces strengthen communities.
Every woman and girl deserves to live and speak freely - online and offline.

Join us.
Watch the launch video.
Share it.
Take a stand.
