THE PIONEER EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF ODU (1942–1965): Honouring the Foundation Builders

As Okobo Development Union (ODU) prepares to mark its historic 90th Anniversary, it becomes imperative to reflect on the noble beginnings, the sacrifices of our founding fathers, and the solid foundations they laid in the spirit of unity, service, and selfless patriotism.

Following years of tireless advocacy, meetings, and communal mobilization (1935 - 1942), the first official elections of the Union were conducted. This milestone gave rise to the inaugural Executive Council, a body of distinguished men who piloted the affairs of the Union with uncommon integrity and visionary zeal for nearly two decades.

Pioneer Executive Council (1942–1965)

1. Etubom Okon Ita, MBE – National President

2. Chief Effiong Okon Eyo – Vice President

3. Chief Ekpo Bassey Ntekim – General Secretary

4. Elder Effiong Okon Uyo – Assistant General Secretary

5. Hon. Raphael Edet Etong – Treasurer

6. Owong Edet Isuo (Etta) – Patron

7. Chief Edet Odiong (Odu) – Patron

Other Distinguished Pioneer Members;

*Chief Effiong Bassey Offiong
*Chief Edet Abia

*Chief Eyo Bassey Ntekim
*Chief Okon Umo Okon
*Chief Inyang Ukpabio

A Notable Transition:
History records that in 1959, Mr. Augustine Okon took over the position of General Secretary following the departure of Chief Ekpo Bassey Ntekim, who ventured into active partisan politics, another demonstration of the Union’s fertile ground for nurturing national leadership.

Today, as we ascend the ninth floor of our institutional journey, we pay glowing tribute to these pioneers whose courage, foresight, and organizational acumen gave birth to the ODU. They were men ahead of their time, united by vision, bonded by heritage, and driven by purpose.

Their legacy is the torch we carry, their sacrifices the stones on which we stand, and their dreams the compass guiding us into a better, stronger, and more united future.

In this edition, we proudly unveil all the Executive Council members from inception to date, as a mark of honour, remembrance, and celebration. We reaffirm our commitment to the values they held dear, even as we press forward, undeterred, in the pursuit of a more robust and progressive Union.

Long live ODU.
Long live Okobuo.
Long live the legacy of our pioneers.

ODU SECRETARIAT.
