International Safe Abortion Day 💚

Everyone deserves access to accurate information, safe care and respectful support when making decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

Stigma and misinformation can make people afraid to seek care or ask questions. That is why conversations about abortion must include safety, dignity, privacy and access to reliable information.

Today, we reaffirm the importance of creating spaces where people can seek the care and information they need without shame or judgment.

Safe care. Informed choices. Dignity for all.

Taking a moment to look back, learn and plan forward. 💚

Yesterday, the RHRI team came together for our review meeting — a space to reflect on the work we’ve been doing, the progress we’ve made, the lessons along the way, and the areas where we can do better.

It was a time for honest conversations, shared reflections and looking at our programmes and activities from different perspectives. We discussed what worked, what could have been better, the gaps we need to pay attention to, and how we can strengthen our work moving forward.

Because meaningful community work is not just about doing the work. It is also about taking time to ask ourselves: Are we reaching the people we intend to reach? Are we responding to what communities actually need? And how can we do better?

Yesterday was one of those moments to pause, reflect and realign.

The work continues — with new lessons, renewed ideas and a clearer focus on what comes next. 💚

Sounds shocking, right?

But this has been the reality of Nigeria’s laws around attempted su***de. There is now movement toward decriminalising attempted su***de, but the proposed change still has to go through the legislative process.

And no, we are NOT saying you should wait for the law to change.

We are saying: please seek help.

If you’re struggling, talk to someone you trust. Reach out to a mental-health professional or visit a healthcare facility.

And if you need support, you can reach out to RHRI too.

You don’t have to face a difficult moment alone.

The people closest to an issue often understand what needs to change.
A safe space can make it easier for people to speak honestly.
And sometimes, listening is the first step towards meaningful action.

From community conversations to psychosocial support, advocacy, trainings and outreach, every experience teaches us something new.

What does it look like when knowledge becomes an asset?

As a legal practitioner and lead facilitator of the Paralegal Training, Elizabeth Samuel shares her experience working with the girls and reflects on the knowledge they gained throughout the training.

For her, one of the most rewarding parts was seeing the girls engage, learn, and gain knowledge that could become a valuable asset to them if they take it seriously and put it into practice.

She also shares how privileged she felt to be part of the training and looks forward to seeing how the girls use what they have learnt in the future.

When knowledge is placed in the right hands, the possibilities are endless.

With the support of the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), RHRI continues to create spaces that equip communities with knowledge and tools to understand and advocate for their rights.

Tunde Ladipo, a bunk owner in Lagos, shares his experience from the Paralegal Training and reflects on the lessons and knowledge he gained from the session.

Creating opportunities for people within the community to learn about their rights and better understand the systems that affect their lives is an important part of building safer and more informed communities.

With the support of the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), RHRI continues to create spaces for learning, dialogue, and empowerment within communities.
