The 2026 World Refugee day theme, โ€œ๐™๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ก ๐™€๐™ซ๐™š๐™ง๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™š ๐™ž๐™จ ๐™Ž๐™–๐™›๐™š,โ€ reminds us that the right to seek safety remains a shared human responsibility. Around the world, conflicts, persecution, insecurity, climate shocks, hunger and economic hardship continue to force millions to flee their homes. Safety must therefore mean more than survival; it must include dignity, protection, opportunity and hope.

For Nigeria, the refugee situation is both a national and global concern. Recent NCFRMI reports indicate that Nigeria hosts about 150,000 refugees from Cameroon, Sudan, Central African Republic and other countries. At the same time, about 145,000 Nigerians are refugees abroad, especially in Cameroon, Niger, Chad and Libya. This shows Nigeriaโ€™s dual position as both a host country and a country of origin for people displaced by insecurity and humanitarian crises.

RELIF recognises Nigeriaโ€™s commitment to the principle of non-refoulement, which protects refugees and asylum seekers from being forcibly returned to places where their lives or freedom may be at risk. However, beyond receiving and registering displaced persons, greater attention must be given to safe, voluntary and dignified reintegration, especially for Nigerian refugees who wish to return home.

Return should not mean returning to hunger, unemployment, insecurity or exclusion. Refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons and host communities need livelihood support, education, healthcare, psychosocial care, legal protection and community-based reintegration opportunities.

RELIF SOIL Scholars Strengthening Skills for Sustainable Agriculture

As part of the ongoing success of the Resilient Engagement for Livelihoods and Inclusive Foundation (RELIF) Skills for Occupational Independence and Livelihoods (SOIL) Scholarship Programme, beneficiaries of the scholarship were among the trainees who participated in an intensive five-day practical training on compost production, biofertilizers, biostimulants, and sustainable soil health management held at the Leventis Foundation Nigeria Agricultural Training School, Yaba, from 1โ€“5 June 2026.

The training, facilitated by Dr. William Zimmerman, Professor of Environmental Microbiology (USA), equipped participants with practical skills in environmentally friendly farming practices that promote soil fertility, reduce dependence on synthetic inputs, and support climate-smart agricultural production.

This learning opportunity reflects the growing impact of the RELIF SOIL Scholarship Programme in providing rural youths with access to quality agricultural education, practical livelihood skills, and pathways to sustainable economic independence.

Coinciding with World Environment Day 2026, the training also aligns with RELIF's continued advocacy for environmental sustainability through sustainable agriculture, soil restoration, organic waste recycling, climate resilience, and responsible natural resource management.

At RELIF, we remain committed to investing in people, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and supporting agricultural practices that protect the environment while strengthening community resilience.

Practical Agriculture Practical Impact: A RELIF SOIL Programme Journey Series

At RELIF, we believe that sustainable community transformation begins when young people are equipped with practical skills, meaningful opportunities, and the confidence to build better futures.

This practical learning segment captures one of the successful applicants under the RELIF Skills for Occupational Independence and Livelihoods (SOIL) Programme during a routine broiler-feeding session at the Leventis Foundation Nigeria Agricultural Training School, Yaba Abuja Study Centre. The experience demonstrates how hands-on agricultural education can strengthen youth empowerment, livelihood resilience, and sustainable rural development.

Through practical exposure to poultry production, enterprise development, animal management, and modern agricultural techniques, participants are gaining real-life skills capable of improving household livelihoods, strengthening food security, and promoting economic independence within their communities.

This journey also reflects RELIFโ€™s broader commitment to:
โœ… Education and Capacity Building
โœ… Youth Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Development
โœ… Climate-Smart and Sustainable Agriculture

This story is once again a reminder that opportunities become transformative when rural youths are intentionally supported to learn, grow, and lead.

07/05/2026

Through the Resilient Engagement for Livelihoods and Inclusive Foundation Skills for Occupational Independence and Livelihoods ( ) Programme, we continue to demonstrate that meaningful development begins by creating access to opportunities for young people in underserved and rural communities.
The interview reflections from beneficiaries participating in the one-year Leventis Foundation (Nigeria) Agricultural Training School Programme reveal more than personal dreams of successes. In this chat one of the candidates reflects on the impact of intentional investment in youth empowerment, mechanized agriculture, livelihood resilience, and inclusive community development.

From Apa Local Government Area to Abuja, these young participants carried with them not only dreams but also the realities of rural communities often affected by unemployment, limited access to skills, and economic vulnerability. Through mentorship, preparation sessions, and guidance support provided under the SOIL Programme, they approached the examination process with greater confidence, purpose, and awareness of modern agribusiness opportunities.

At RELIF, we believe that agriculture is not only a means of food production but also a pathway for dignity, resilience, peacebuilding, and sustainable livelihoods.

Disasters donโ€™t just happen โ€” theyโ€™re shaped by the systems around us. Risks grow when environmental, social, and governance factors are ignored.

1๏ธโƒฃ Climate change
Rising temperatures are supercharging hazards โ€” making floods, droughts, and storms more frequent, intense, and unpredictable.

2๏ธโƒฃ Environmental degradation
When forests are cleared and wetlands drained, we lose natureโ€™s first line of defence against floods, landslides, and coastal surges.

3๏ธโƒฃ Poverty & inequality
Communities with fewer resources are often forced to live where hazards hit hardest โ€“ without safety nets, each disaster deepens inequality.

4๏ธโƒฃ Poorly planned urban development
Rapid, unregulated growth leaves cities exposed โ€“ weak infrastructure and unsafe housing turn hazards into human catastrophes.

5๏ธโƒฃ Weak governance
When coordination and accountability are missing, disaster prevention and response are ineffective.

๐Ÿ’ก Tackling these drivers means tackling risk itself โ€” building resilience that lasts.

At Resilient Engagement for Livelihoods and Inclusive Foundation, our mission centres on community resilience amidst the localization agenda. We aim at empowering communities to define and drive their own development pathways. We work with local actors, especially young people, women's groups, and other vulnerable groups as partners in building resilience and sustainable livelihoods.

Through RELIF's Skills for Occupational Independence and Livelihoods (SOIL) Scholarship, four (4) youths from communities in Ojope District are set to receive capacity-building support and mentorship to gain practical modern and sustainable agricultural skills, strengthen self-reliance, and contribute to locally driven development outcomes.

This chat with a 2025/26 applicant deeply reflects their ambition to turn hidden opportunities into impact while advancing economic empowerment, climate action, and inclusive community growth led by the communities themselves.
