Legendary Ukwuani musician, Sir Danny K (born Daniel Onyefunuwe on April 9, 1947), widely regarded as the oldest Ukwuani musician has passed away hours ago after battling illness quietly for some time.

Sir Danny K began his musical journey in 1969 as a drummer and rattler under the mentorship of late highlife pioneer King Kennytone and His Topper Band.

Joined Fela AnΓkΓΊlΓ‘pΓ³ Kuti’s legendary Africa '70 band as a skilled drummer in 1977. Toured extensively across Africa and Europe during the late 1970s and 1980s with Fela’s band. Played with other prominent musical groups including the Oriental Brothers International Band, Harmony Kings, Rogana Ottah, and King Ubulu.

During his illness, we visited him on several occasions and published appeals encouraging the public to support this great legend while he was still alive. We sincerely thank everyone who answered those calls and extended their support to him.

Though Sir Danny K is no longer with us, he leaves behind a rich musical legacy that will continue to inspire generations. His contributions to Ukwuani music will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Sir Danny K. Your legacy lives on πŸ™πŸΏ

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Ukwuani people is that they exist only within Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, and Ukwuani Local Government Areas of Delta State. That is simply not true. Ukwuani is bigger than what many people think.

The Ukwuani people are an ethnic nation with a rich history that reaches beyond the borders of three local government areas. Understanding this helps us appreciate the true size, influence, and historical footprint of the Ukwuani people.

The Ukwuani people are found in several other communities across Nigeria. Historical accounts and oral traditions indicate the presence of communities with Ukwuani ancestry in Ogbaru (Anambra State), Oguta (Imo State), Ndoni and Isukwe (Ahoada East LGA, Rivers State), as well as Abraka and Orogun in Delta State, among others. Many of these communities still preserve traditions and oral histories linking them to their Ukwuani origins.

An ethnic identity is not defined by state or local government boundaries. Administrative boundaries were created for governance; they do not determine who a people are or where their history began.

The Tiv remain Tiv wherever they live. The Ijaw remain Ijaw across different states. The Yoruba, Igbo, Igala and many other ethnic nationalities maintain their identities regardless of where they are found. The same principle applies to the Ukwuani people.

This is a reminder that ethnic identity is not determined by administrative boundaries. Local governments and state boundaries are political creations, but the history, ancestry, language, and culture of a people often extend far beyond them.

Do you know of any other community outside Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, and Ukwuani LGAs with Ukwuani roots? Share your knowledge and help preserve our history.
