There was once a gardener who had two trees in his yard.
The first tree grew fast. It shot up overnight, it seemed. People admired it, walked past, and pointed. "Look how tall it is," they would say. It had beautiful branches. It cast an impressive shade.
The second tree? Nobody said much about it. It didn't shoot up or impress anyone. But every single season, quietly and without apology, it bore fruit.
Years later, a storm came.
The tall tree โ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐จ๐ง๐ โ snapped in two. Its roots had never gone deep. Its growth had always been surface-level.
Beautiful, but hollow.
The fruit-bearing tree? It bent, swayed, but held.
๐๐๐ง๐ฒ ๐จ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ก๐๐ฏ๐ ๐๐๐๐ง ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐.
We've chased visible results โ the titles, the achievements, the appearance of a strong Christian life โ but our roots have been shallow.
And the moment life pressed in, the moment temptation knocked, the moment affliction came for the word's sake โ we found ourselves brittle.
Dr. Nnanna Ukpai said something last Thursday that stopped us in our tracks:
"๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ง๐๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ . ๐๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐ญ๐๐, ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐๐ ๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐๐."
And we realized, God is not just interested in your fruit. He is interested in your root.
Before He shows you the harvest, He will supervise the depth. Before He lifts you to the high place, He will ensure your roots go into the deep. Because everything of value in this kingdom โ like gold, like diamonds โ is not on the surface. It is found in the deep.
