At the point of embracing Jesus Christ, my major concerns bordered mainly on my ego, what will become of my opportunities in Politics, how would my friends and my community perceive me going forward, what would my relations say of my new lifestyle, how would I transit from being a socialite to living a secluded, God-like gentleman life. Other challenges were: how could I change my character at an age, how do I drop certain habits and addictions that contrast with my new life as a believer, child of God and light bearer. Part of my initial concern as a new believer was to discover exact reason(s) people resist the gospel of Jesus Christ; why was He crucified, and why were His early followers persecuted, why were the present follower still being persecuted in many countries all over the world. What evil things did Jesus commit that made the Jews and Gentiles hate Him. [ 501 more words ]

I DOUBTED GOD’s EXISTENCE #2

Not that I had any special reason for not embracing Christianity, neither was I into any traditional religion that I depended on, but the plain truth was that Christian life did not in any way appeal to me for unexplainable reasons. I saw no reason why I should spend my time in such pastime. But frankly speaking, I knew not what Christianity is all about. I never even gave it a chance or any thought as to why I should reject God’s love and care that cost me nothing but verbal and whole hearted acceptance of Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior.

Reflecting back now, I could vividly remember that my environment and the life style of majority of people around me then did not permit me any space to try God as to prove or disprove his kindness, care and love for me. I rejected, hated and condemned God without actually knowing Him nor going closer to see His wickedness. God, please forgive me.

This life style continued in my youth years and even during my early marriage life. I decidedly but ignorantly remained a pagan. Surprisingly, I had deep dislike for fe**sh and voodoo practices. I had no faith and liking for anything that had to do with shrines even in my maturity age. It looked so funny as far as I was concerned, and I resisted emulating few youths that either joined Churches or attended different shrines on elected days for worship. I also resisted joining any cult group, but remained on my own.

Because of the environment I grew up however, in which there was constant violent fight and competition among youths as to who would be the strongest, I acquired charms that prevented knife and broken bottles used freely from penetrating my flesh. Fight would break out during traditional festivities, moonlight gatherings and youth social meetings. That was the only reason I had anything to do with fe**sh practice. I womanized a lot during my youth years, and drank moderate alcohol.

When I became an adult and got married, I still did not believe in Christianity and hated traditional practice as well. I saw it as a waste of time attending Church on Sundays. I had strong belief I did not need Christianity to achieve my life dreams, and that the invincible gods my father prayed to would always help me. My wife attended Catholic only on Sundays, and that was the much I came close to Christian life. She was not too committed to the Catholic life, but was rather compelled by colleagues that pestered her.

This could be your current situation and approach. Do you assume that Christianity is all but a joke? Have you been brain-washed to the point of hating Christianity and Christians with a passion, even without knowing exactly what it stands for? You may have been compelled to hate God and wish you see Him in person so you stab and kill Him. You may have been told that God does not exist. You may have been told that God is responsible for your miseries.

Also, you may have been told lots of negative stories and cooked up lies about Christians and Jesus Christ, just to make you reject, hate and kill them. “The taste of the pudding is, certainly, in the eating.” You need to come closer to God so you can accurately say: He is bad or wicked, or otherwise. You can hardly assess God from afar, and it is utterly wrong for you to base your relationship with someone else, how much more the Creator of the universe, on hearsay.

One of the first things I know God will do for you is that He will give you liberty, freedom, surround you with love and care, protect you from oppression and fear, heal your depression, heal your psychological challenge, free you from any form of bo***ge, free you from sin and crime, and immediately reward you with life full of light and bright future, open doors of success for you. God will tell you to love everyone, hate nobody and kill no one. In (Matthew 11:28) the word of God says: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

I DOUBTED GOD’s EXISTENCE #1

I was born in a remote farm settlement, Ogbuakpu in the present Anambra East Local Government of Anambra State, Nigeria, where my parents, Chukwudebelu & Ifude Okoye, lived out their happy marriage life. We lived in a hut made of clay soil and grass ceiling. My father had a carved wooden image called (chi) god, to which he made sacrifices from time to time, begging the gods through libations to save his children and bring fortune to the family.

He would bring down the wooden images clothed with red and white clothes from its abode, chew cola nut and splash it on the images, and then began incantations that would last for some minutes, after which he would put it back. We revered the images as potent gods and believed it was responsible for our long life, good health, our destiny and successful exploits.

I and my elder siblings would surround our father, admiring and rejoicing that his prayers would come to fruition in our lives. We had great faith in the gods and who would blame us. On some occasions, he would sacrifice fowl or goat to the (chi), guaranteeing sumptuous meal for the family and neighbors, which experience would remain green in our memories, even as we inwardly pray and await another opportunity. My father passed away a pagan while my mother joined her ancestors a Catholic.

This background influenced my early childhood life, as I had no urge whatsoever to embrace Christianity, especially during my primary and secondary school era when most of my peers joined one denomination or the other. I can vividly remember an elderly woman of blessed memories, Mama Chude, who was in charge of Block Rosary prayers in my community then. She did all she could to make me join other children in the Block Rosary evening prayers but I resisted all her efforts.

The second part of this article will be published soon. Do not miss any of it so you can enjoy it to the end, as to understand what it is all about. It is interesting, entertaining and an important life lesson.
