HAPPY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY, NIGERIAN YOUTH
Today, as the world marks International Youth Day, Theme: "LOCAL YOUTH ACTIONS FOR SDGs AND BEYOND", we in Isiala Ngwa North stand together to remind ourselves that our dreams, our energy, and our actions matter, not just for today, but for the kind of future we want to build.
When the United Nations speaks of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), they are not speaking of some far-off vision. They are talking about the same things that concern us here at home, decent jobs, quality education, zero poverty, gender equality, and a healthy environment. And at the heart of all these is something very dear to us today: youth employment.
In our LGA, our young people are full of life, ideas, and determination. From the fertile farmlands of Umuosu and Umuomainta, to the bustling trade spots in Umuode and Nsulu, our youth are already contributing in meaningful ways. Yet, we also know that too many of our brothers and sisters wake up each day unsure where their next income will come from.
Youth unemployment is not just an economic challenge, it is an emotional and social one. An idle hand is not only a loss of productivity, but a potential loss of self worth. If we truly want a sustainable future, we must create an environment where every young person can see a path forward, where talent is not wasted, and where ideas are not ignored.
The truth is, we don’t need to wait for “big” interventions before we act. Change can and should start here:
Agricultural innovation: Our land is rich, but our methods can be richer. Youth-led agribusiness training, modern farming techniques, and agro-processing ventures can turn subsistence farming into sustainable income.
Skill acquisition hubs: From tailoring to ICT, carpentry to renewable energy solutions, we can organize skill development programs that equip our youth with marketable, future-proof skills.
Entrepreneurship support: Micro grants, mentorship programs, and cooperative societies can help our young people turn small ideas into thriving businesses.
Partnerships with schools & institutions: Linking our secondary schools, vocational centers, and universities with practical internship and apprenticeship opportunities in local industries.
As the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Isiala Ngwa North Chapter, we are committed to being a bridge between government and youth, between opportunity and talent, between today and tomorrow. Our role is to mobilize, to train, to advocate, and to inspire.
But no council can do this alone. We need parents who believe in their children’s dreams, Political Leaders, Youth Stakeholders who are willing to open doors, and government agencies ready to support grassroots initiatives.
Let us remember that the SDGs are not slogans, they are blueprints. The more we take action locally, the more we contribute globally. Our contribution may start with one youth getting a job, one young woman starting a business, or one young man learning a skill but multiplied across our communities, it becomes a movement.
Isiala Ngwa North is not too small to make a difference. In fact, our size is our strength, we are close enough to understand each other’s struggles, and united enough to solve them together.
Fellow youths, this is our time. The world is moving fast, and we cannot afford to be spectators. Whether through farming, technology, arts, education, or trade, let us be doers. Let us be builders. Let us be the generation that turns the promise of “Youth Employment for a Sustainable Future” into the reality our children will inherit.
Thanks in Nation Building,
Comrade Nwankpa Okezie Cosmas
Chairman,
NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA, ISIALA NGWA NORTH CHAPTER
