THE POWER OF WORDS.......

Years back, while in the University, I went to check my 200L results in the office of my level adviser. My level adviser shares his office with another lecturer in the department.

I remembered that day like yesterday, I went in with a course mate. Unfortunately for both of us, our CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) was at one point something. You will agree with me that it was low for any course not to talk of Engineering. My level adviser was being diplomatic as he was trying to rebuke and encourage us at the same time. This lecturer from nowhere, just jumped into the discussion, looked at both of us and said we had family problems. He went on to say we were not serious with our studies bla bla bla....

Maybe I may have my own issues but I could vouch for my course mate because I knew how brilliant he was. This was someone who used to correct 400L students that were taking us tutorials during Remedial ( Pre-degree course). What went wrong with him, I may not be able to say but the lecturer's approach was so wrong.

Recently, I saw the said lecturer on Facebook as people I may know. Immediately I saw his picture, that incident came to mind. Then I asked myself, even if I send him a friend's request, wetin we wan dey talk sef?

Educators and other child handlers need to be very careful of our use of words to children. It stays in their memories for a long time. If not well handled, it can affect their self-esteem for life.
Please be mindful of your words. Are your words soothing or do they harm others?

I didn't have any family problems after all. Na me no understand myself 😄

CELEBRATING STUDENTS WHO INSPIRED ME SERIES!

Episode 4
David Adeshakin!

David was my SS 1 student that year. He was an enthusiastic learner who derives so much pleasure from putting great effort into his academics. I still remember how he cried for scoring 58 over 60. I will be like, must you collect all my marks all the time 😂

At a time when most boys of his age were battling with an identity crisis, he chose to make his stand known. Sometimes I wonder how his mum had so much influence on him. His classmates will tease him and call him Mummy's boy but that doesn't stop him from saying my mum said it is wrong to do this or that.

I remembered the bombastic look his classmates do give him, each time he mentions that "Mrs Damilare you gave us an assignment" 😂 They have tried to bully him a lot of time but that doesn't stop him from standing for the truth.

Maybe it was because of him I named my son David 😂 because he was one student who had so much effect on me. Thank you David for being a beacon of hope to me.

After spending 5 weeks with my new set of learners, I can see that there is a whole lot of work to be done.

I often tell my children that everyone will have to play their parts. I will do my part as your teacher, you will do your part as my learner and your parents will do their parts too.

I once wrote an article on factors that affect a child's learning. I have shared it a few times on my page but I know there will be some people who haven't seen it at all. For the next couple of days, I will be sharing two of those factors each day. Hopefully this will help parents and teachers to develop a healthy attitude to their children's learning. Come along with me.........

TEACH YOUR SONS EMPATHY.....

Some days back, I stumbled on a post on Facebook. The poster mentioned that her boyfriend asked her not to visit because she was on her period. Someone commented and said when she got married, she was on her period one day and got the floor stained. She said her husband ran her a warm bath, asked her to go and rest while he cleaned up the stain.

That story made me remember the day I was stained in class. I was in 200 Level then and just finished lectures for the day. As I was leaving the hall, a course mate ran after me trying to get my attention. He was someone that I joke with alot, so I didn't take him seriously when he said he wanted to tell me something. Until he shouted, "you are stained" before I stopped and checked my clothes. I was so embarrassed that day. He came closer to me and said, look for a nearby toilet and clean up. While I was thanking him the next day, he said it's nothing, I have sisters too.

That act of his really got to me and it made me understand that THE MEN WE SEE TODAY, ARE THE PRODUCTS OF THE BOYS WE RAISED YESTERDAY.
Let's do better for the generation coming behind us by teaching our boys basics about girls and most importantly teach them to have empathy not just for their sisters and wives but for every woman they come across.
Let's make the world a better place to live for everyone!

CELEBRATING STUDENTS WHO INSPIRED ME SERIES!

Episode 3
Deborah Jesuniran!

Deborah was a JSS 1 student in one of the schools where I taught.
The first thing that drew my attention to her was her handwriting. Talk of the teacher's handwriting, that was the kind of writing she had. You will be so fascinated by her handwriting that you will even forget to read what she has written before marking it 😂

Talk of brain and character in one person. Debbie's name will never be found in the name of the noise makers. No one ever reports her of any wrong doing.

You don't need to explain for long before she understands a new topic. She won't raise her hand to contribute or ask a question but ask her any question, she has answers to it.

She will miss school for a day and ends up explaining assignments to those who were seated right in class when the work was taught. Deborah was indeed an exceptional child. I don't know where she is now but I respect her a lot.
