Sometimes, lasting change begins with one simple question.

“Are you leaking?”

That question became the Golden Question at the Stakeholder Engagement Meeting on Strengthening Obstetric Fistula Referral Pathways in Niger State, convened by RAiSE Foundation.

The meeting brought together representatives from health facilities, government, healthcare professionals, community actors and development partners to answer one important question:

How do we ensure that every woman living with obstetric fistula is identified early, referred promptly and receives the care she deserves?

Together, stakeholders mapped the ideal referral journey—from identification in the community to surgery and rehabilitation—and proposed practical solutions, including stronger community awareness, referral focal persons, improved transportation, greater involvement of CHIPS agents, men and the media, and bringing services closer to women through mobile surgical outreaches in identified hotspots.

A memorable highlight of the meeting was the investiture of participants as Obstetric Fistula Referral Champions, recognising their commitment to lead efforts in early identification, timely referral, community awareness and coordinated care within their respective facilities and communities.

This was more than a meeting. It was the beginning of a stronger, more coordinated referral system that ensures no woman is left to suffer in silence because she did not know where to turn for help.

Together, we are strengthening referral pathways, restoring dignity and ensuring that no woman is left behind.

As part of the free medical outreach organised by Mainstream Foundation at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, Raise Foundation provided free breast and cervical cancer screening for women from Bida and surrounding communities.

Over the two-day outreach, 246 women were screened, with 35 women identified for further investigations and appropriate medical management. These women will now begin the next phase of care, ensuring they receive the support and treatment they need.

For many of the women, this was their first-ever cancer screening—an important step that could make all the difference. Early detection gives hope, improves treatment outcomes, and saves lives.

We appreciate Mainstream Foundation for organising this impactful outreach and for creating another opportunity to bring life-saving healthcare closer to the people.

Over the past three days, we had the privilege of training 15 Community Mobilizers on the identification, referral, and support of women living with obstetric fistula.

These mobilizers are more than volunteers—they are trusted voices within their communities. They are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to:

* Identify women living with obstetric fistula early.
* Provide compassionate, stigma-free support.
* Facilitate timely referrals for free treatment.
* Raise awareness and help prevent new cases through community education.

Obstetric fistula remains a preventable and treatable childbirth injury, yet too many women continue to suffer in silence due to limited awareness, stigma, and delayed access to care.

By investing in community mobilizers, we are bringing hope closer to the women who need it most. Every conversation started, every woman identified, and every successful referral is another step towards restoring dignity and ensuring that no woman is left behind.

Our sincere appreciation goes to our facilitators, our partner Fistula Foundation and every participant whose passion and commitment made this workshop a success. Together, we are building stronger community networks that will continue to transform lives long after the training has ended.

The journey does not end here—it begins in the communities.

The just-concluded Minna Medical Outreach, in partnership with Mainstream Foundation, delivered vital healthcare services to the community. The outreach provided free breast and cervical screening, eye screenings, distributed reading glasses to those in need, and carried out cataract surgeries for selected cases.

In total, 1,730 individuals accessed free eye care, with sight restored for many, while 456 women were screened for breast and cervical cancer, with 34 cases identified for further care.

All patients will receive follow-up treatment and support, reinforcing our commitment to building the healthy society we all desire.

Behind these numbers are lives changed, families relieved, and hope restored.

Early detection remains one of the strongest chances for better health outcomes
