Champions are not made in one match.

They are built through discipline, resilience, teamwork, and the courage to keep going even after setbacks.

As the curtain falls on the FIFA World Cup 2026, we congratulate Spain on lifting the trophy after a hard-fought victory. We also celebrate every nation that participated, reminding us that greatness is achieved through preparation, unity, and perseverance.

But beyond the goals, the trophies, and the celebrations lies a lesson that extends far beyond football.

Strong teams build strong nations.

In the same way, strong communities are built when people come together to solve problems, support one another, and work toward a shared vision.

At Involve Community Engagement Initiative (ICEI), we believe that every community can win against poverty, poor healthcare, environmental degradation, inequality, and hunger when individuals, organizations, and leaders choose collaboration over complacency.

Just as every player on the pitch has a role, every one of us has a role in building healthier families, safer communities, cleaner environments, and a more sustainable future.

Congratulations once again to Spain, and to every team that inspired millions around the world.

The final whistle may have blown on the World Cup, but our collective mission to create lasting change continues.

Together, we can build communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

"This tree is blocking the beauty of my house."

That was all Mr. Ade needed to say.

He picked up his cutlass.

A few swings later, the beautiful tree that had stood for years came crashing down.

The compound looked cleaner.

The view was clearer.

He smiled.

Months later, something else changed.

The afternoon heat became unbearable.

The living room that once stayed cool now felt like an oven.

Birds no longer perched around the house.

When the rains came, water rushed through the compound, washing away part of the soil.

The tree he thought was a nuisance had been quietly protecting his home all along.

This is a story playing out in many communities today.

Trees are cut down to create space, improve visibility, or simply because they "drop too many leaves."

But every tree removed without replacement leaves our environment a little more vulnerable.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest every year due to deforestation. The United Nations warns that trees play a critical role in absorbing carbon dioxide, cooling our environment, preventing erosion, improving air quality, and providing habitats for wildlife.

A mature tree does more than provide shade.

🌳 It cools the air.

🌳 It improves the quality of the air we breathe.

🌳 It reduces flooding and soil erosion.

🌳 It provides shelter for birds and other wildlife.

🌳 It helps fight climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide.

Before cutting down a healthy tree, ask yourself:

Is it truly a problem, or is it quietly solving problems I cannot see?

If a tree must be removed for safety or development, plant another.

Better still, plant two.

Because the trees we protect today will protect our children tomorrow.

Don't just cut a tree. Grow a future.

The market woman sighed as she picked up three tomatoes.

Not a basket.

Not a bowl.

Just three.

A few years ago, the same amount of money would have bought much more.

Today, many families are buying less, skipping meals, or settling for less nutritious food—not because they want to, but because food is becoming harder to afford.

Food security isn't just about having food in the market.

It's about being able to put healthy food on the table every day.

According to the United Nations, millions of people around the world face food insecurity, while rising food prices continue to put pressure on households.

The reality is simple:

When food becomes scarce or expensive, children suffer first.

Families struggle.

Communities become vulnerable.

Food security starts with supporting local farmers, reducing food waste, embracing home gardening where possible, and creating systems that ensure everyone has access to safe and nutritious food.

Because no parent should have to choose between feeding their family and meeting other basic needs.

Food is more than a meal.

It is dignity.

It is health.

It is hope.

"It's too hot. I can't sleep under a mosquito net."

That was Ibrahim's excuse every night.

His wife kept reminding him.

"The mosquitoes are too much these days."

But he ignored it.

A few weeks later, their youngest child developed a fever.

Then came the chills.

The hospital visit.

The malaria test.

Positive.

What seemed like a small inconvenience had become a health challenge for the entire family.

Many of us can relate.

We know mosquitoes are dangerous, yet we often leave our windows open, sleep without protection, or keep treated nets folded away.

The truth is simple:

Mosquitoes do not need permission to enter your home.

And malaria does not announce itself before it strikes.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), malaria remains one of the leading causes of illness and death in Africa, especially among children under five and pregnant women.

The good news?

One of the most effective and affordable ways to prevent malaria is by sleeping under an Insecticide-Treated Net (ITN) every night.

Studies show that sleeping under treated nets can significantly reduce malaria infections and help protect vulnerable family members from mosquito bites.

A mosquito net may seem ordinary.

But every night it serves as a shield between your family and disease.

✅ Protects children while they sleep.

✅ Protects pregnant women and unborn babies.

✅ Reduces mosquito bites.

✅ Helps prevent malaria infections.

✅ Saves families from avoidable medical expenses.

If you do not have a treated net, visit your nearest health facility to ask about mosquito net distribution programs or purchase one from a trusted supplier.

Tonight, before you switch off the lights, ask yourself:

Is my family protected?

Because sometimes the simplest prevention is the most powerful.

A treated net may cost little.

But the protection it provides is priceless.

Sleep under a treated net. Sleep safely. Live healthier.

"I'll sleep when I make it."

That was Kunle's favorite response whenever anyone told him to slow down.

He woke up before sunrise.

Worked his 9-to-5.

Ran a side business after work.

Took calls late into the night.

Answered messages at 2 a.m.

After all, the bills would not pay themselves.

The children needed school fees.

Food prices were rising.

Life was demanding more.

So he kept pushing.

Until his body pushed back.

The constant headaches started.

Then the forgetfulness.

Then the irritability.

Tasks that once took an hour now took three.

Despite working longer hours, he was achieving less.

The irony?

The thing he thought he couldn't afford—rest—was exactly what he needed most.

Many of us can relate.

We live in a world that celebrates being busy.

We admire people who work around the clock.

We wear exhaustion like a badge of honor.

But our bodies were never designed to operate without rest.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and sleep health experts, adults generally need 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night for optimal physical and mental health.

Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that insufficient sleep is associated with increased risks of:

⚠️ High blood pressure

⚠️ Heart disease

⚠️ Obesity

⚠️ Depression and anxiety

⚠️ Reduced immunity

⚠️ Poor concentration and productivity

Sleep is not wasted time.

It is maintenance.

While you sleep, your body repairs tissues.

Your brain processes information.

Your immune system strengthens.

Your stress levels reset.

Your energy is restored.

In other words, sleep is work your body does for you.

The truth is simple:

A tired mind makes poor decisions.

A tired body breaks down faster.

A tired person cannot consistently perform at their best.

Rest is not laziness.

Rest is responsibility.

So tonight, give yourself permission to pause.

Turn off the screen.

Put down the work.

Take a breath.

Get some sleep.

Because your family does not just need your hustle.

They need your health.

And your dreams will be easier to achieve when your body has the strength to carry them.

Rest well. Sleep well. Live well.

Last year, Musa planted his crops at the usual time.

The rains came late.

When they finally arrived, they came with floods.

Weeks later, the scorching heat returned, drying up what was left of the farm.

By harvest season, the yield was a fraction of what he expected.

For Musa, this wasn't just bad luck.

It was climate change.

And whether we realize it or not, many of us are already experiencing its effects.

The unusually hot afternoons.

The unexpected flooding after a few hours of rain.

The longer dry seasons.

The rising cost of food.

The communities displaced by extreme weather.

Climate change is no longer a future problem.

It is happening now.

According to the United Nations (UN), the last decade was the warmest ever recorded globally. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports that 2024 was among the hottest years on record, with rising temperatures contributing to more frequent heatwaves, droughts and flooding events worldwide.

In Nigeria, climate change is affecting agriculture, food security, water resources, public health and livelihoods.

But here's the good news:

Small actions, multiplied by millions of people, can create meaningful change.

🌱 Plant and protect trees.

♻️ Reduce waste and recycle responsibly.

🚶 Walk, cycle or carpool when possible.

💡 Conserve electricity and energy.

🌍 Support policies and initiatives that protect the environment.

The fight against climate change is not only for governments and scientists.

It belongs to all of us.

Because every plastic bottle properly disposed of.

Every tree planted.

Every environmental decision made responsibly.

Is a vote for a healthier future.

The Earth is not ours to keep.

It is ours to protect for the generations coming after us.

There is no Planet B.

Let's act like it.

"Chai! This headache wants to finish me today!"

"Ayo, abeg buy me Paracetamol."

A few minutes later...

"Add Alabukun join."

Then someone else suggests another painkiller.

Everything goes down at once.

Problem solved.

Or so it seems.

For many people, this is a normal day.

Headache? Swallow something.

Body pain? Swallow something.

Fever? Swallow something.

Stomach discomfort? Swallow something.

No questions asked.
No diagnosis.
No medical advice.

Just medication.

But what if the headache is trying to tell you something?

What if it's stress?
Dehydration?
High blood pressure?
Malaria?
Eye strain?
Lack of sleep?
Or another underlying condition?

Painkillers can temporarily silence symptoms, but they do not always solve the problem.

In fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), unsafe medication practices and inappropriate use of medicines contribute significantly to preventable health complications globally.

Many people are unaware that excessive or prolonged use of common painkillers can increase the risk of:

⚠️ Liver damage

⚠️ Kidney problems

⚠️ Stomach ulcers and bleeding

⚠️ Drug dependence and misuse

⚠️ Dangerous drug interactions

Even medications that are sold over the counter can become harmful when taken incorrectly or in excessive amounts.

The danger is that self-medication often provides relief while hiding the real cause of the illness.

The headache goes away.

The problem stays.

Good health is not simply about treating symptoms.

It is about understanding what your body is trying to tell you.

So the next time your body sends a warning signal, pause before reaching for multiple tablets.

Ask questions.

Rest.

Hydrate.

Seek professional advice when symptoms persist.

Because sometimes the medicine is not the cure.

Sometimes the cure is finding the real problem.

Your body deserves more than guesswork.

Use medicines wisely.

"It's probably just stress."

That was what Chidinma told herself when her son complained of a headache after school.

She gave him water and asked him to rest.

By evening, the headache had become a fever.

By midnight, he was shivering.

The next morning, they were at the hospital.

The diagnosis?

Malaria.

A disease so common that many families underestimate it until it becomes an emergency.

The truth is that malaria remains one of the deadliest diseases affecting children and families across Africa.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were approximately 263 million malaria cases worldwide in 2023, with nearly 597,000 deaths. Alarmingly, 95% of these deaths occurred in Africa, and children under five remain the most vulnerable.

But here's the encouraging part:

Malaria is preventable.

Many cases begin with a mosquito bite, but prevention begins with our daily choices.

✔️ Sleep under insecticide-treated mosquito nets every night.

✔️ Clear stagnant water around your home.

✔️ Keep gutters and drainage channels clean.

✔️ Use approved mosquito repellents where necessary.

✔️ Ensure doors and windows are screened.

✔️ Seek medical attention immediately when fever develops.

✔️ Pregnant women should attend antenatal clinics and receive preventive malaria treatment as recommended.

Many people think malaria starts in the hospital.

It doesn't.

It starts in the puddle behind the house.

The blocked drainage down the street.

The uncovered water container.

The neglected environment where mosquitoes thrive.

A clean environment is more than beautiful.

It saves lives.

This week, take a walk around your home and community.

Remove mosquito breeding sites.

Protect your family.

Because one mosquito bite can change everything but one preventive action can too.

Prevent malaria before it starts.

Your health is worth it.

"My baby is six months old now. What should I start feeding him?"

It is a question many parents ask with equal parts excitement and anxiety.

For six months, breast milk was enough.

No water.
No pap.
No formula supplements.
No porridge.

Just breast milk.

Then suddenly, your little one begins watching you eat, reaching for your spoon, opening their mouth when food comes close.

This is nature's way of saying:

"I'm ready for the next stage."

The transition from exclusive breastfeeding to complementary feeding is one of the most important milestones in a child's life.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, babies should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months and then begin receiving safe, nutritious complementary foods while continuing breastfeeding up to two years and beyond.

Why is this transition so important?

Because after six months, breast milk alone can no longer provide all the nutrients a growing baby needs—especially iron, zinc, protein and energy.

The foods introduced during this period help shape a child's growth, brain development, immunity and future eating habits.

What foods should be introduced from 6 months?

✅ Soft mashed sweet potatoes

✅ Mashed beans

✅ Well-cooked mashed rice

✅ Mashed yam

✅ Mashed avocado

✅ Mashed banana

✅ Eggs (well cooked)

✅ Fish (carefully deboned)

✅ Fruits and vegetables

✅ Nutritious homemade cereals fortified with protein sources

✅ Age-appropriate family meals prepared with minimal salt

The goal is simple:

Variety. Nutrition. Safety.

But there are also things to avoid.

❌ Honey before one year of age

❌ Sugary drinks and soft drinks

❌ Excess salt and seasoning cubes

❌ Highly processed snacks

❌ Choking hazards such as whole nuts and hard foods

❌ Replacing meals with biscuits and sweet treats

❌ Feeding while distracted by screens

One common mistake is filling a child's stomach without nourishing their body.

A baby can look full and still be malnourished.

In fact, UNICEF estimates that millions of children globally suffer from hidden hunger a deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals that affects growth, immunity and learning.

Good nutrition is not about expensive food.

It is about making every bite count.

A spoonful of mashed beans.
An egg.
A banana.
A serving of vegetables.

These small choices become the building blocks of a healthy future.

Because every healthy child begins with informed feeding choices.

The first thousand days of life from pregnancy to a child's second birthdaycan shape a lifetime of health, learning and opportunity.

Let's nourish our children well.

Their future depends on it.
