Students can learn to separate food scraps, reduce waste, appreciate food, grow school gardens and compost organic waste.
These aren't just environmental lessons. They are life skills.

Today's learners are tomorrow's city builders.
Let's teach children that clean communities begin with responsible consumption.

BenueAID team attended the ActionAid Nigeria Youth Round Table Meeting on the Situation of Young People in Humanitarian Action in Benue State.

The meeting brought together young people, youth-led organisations, CSOs and youth actors to discuss meaningful youth participation in humanitarian action, leadership and decision-making. Participants also validated the Gender Transformative Conflict Sensitivity Assessment (GTCSA) conducted in Benue and Borno States.

The participants broke into groups to review the report and shared inputs for necessary action, strengthening the assessment ahead of implementation.

Restaurants, bukas, hotels and food vendors can make a huge difference in reducing food waste.
Start with five actions:
- Measure food waste
- Adjust portions
- Store food correctly
- Recover safe surplus
- Separate organic waste

Less waste can also mean lower costs.
Cleaner food businesses can help build cleaner communities and healthier cities.
Waste less. Serve smarter. Lead by example.

Sometimes food becomes waste simply because there is more than we need.

If food is safe and still fit for consumption, don't make the bin its first destination.

Share with a neighbour. Support someone in need. Donate through food recovery organisations. Redistribute safe surplus from events.
Eat it. Share it. Recover it.

Good food deserves a second chance.

BenueAID joined fellow Benue environmentalists to mark this global environmental action.

Together, we cleaned up drainages and waste sites at Railway and Wurukum Market communities, raised awareness, and helped build a cleaner, greener Benue.

What if yesterday's food scraps could help grow tomorrow's food?
Vegetable scraps, fruit peels, dry leaves, crop residues and other suitable organic materials can become compost.
Instead of sending everything to the dumpsite, let's return organic nutrients to the soil.
Food waste → Compost → Soil → Food.
That's circular thinking in action.

We often call it rubbish because we don't know what else to call it - Banana peels. Yam peels. Plantain peels. Vegetable scraps. Fruit waste.

But organic waste can have another destination - Compost it. Recover it. Use it appropriately. Return nutrients to the soil.

The question isn't always, “Where can I throw this?”

Sometimes, it's “What can this become?”
