Food scraps can support composting, soil health and other practical ways of reducing waste and creating value.

The bigger issue is the system behind the waste. When food, water, land and human effort go into producing something, losing it also means losing the resources behind it.

Is the water safe?
Is it reliable?

What if reaching more people was not the real measure of impact?

We count beneficiaries.

We count trainings.

We count activities completed.

But there is a harder question:
What changed after we left?

Can a family still apply what they learned?

Is a livelihood still stronger?

Is a water system still working?

Is a community better prepared for the next shock?

Do people have greater capacity to solve problems themselves?

Because a project can look successful on paper and still leave very little behind.

Real development is not only about how many people we reach.

It is about what people are able to do differently, sustain and build after the intervention ends.

At GISD, we believe lasting impact begins when communities are not simply recipients of solutions, but active participants in creating them.

The numbers tell us how far we went.
The change tells us whether it mattered.

What should development organizations measure more often?

What makes a community strong isn't always what you can see.

You see homes, farms, markets and people going about their daily lives.

But underneath it all are the systems that keep a community going: water, food, livelihoods, waste management and a healthy environment.

When these systems are weak, families feel it first.

When we invest in them, communities become better prepared to withstand shocks, protect livelihoods and build a better future.

We throw it away. But where exactly is “away”?

That plastic bottle, sachet, food container or nylon bag does not simply disappear.

When waste is poorly managed, it can end up in drainage channels, waterways, open spaces and communities.
And the people living with the consequences are often those with the fewest resources to deal with them.

Flooding.
Pollution.
Health risks.
Lost livelihoods.
Degraded communities.

But there is another side to the story.

Waste can also become an opportunity.
With the right systems, communities can reduce waste, reuse materials, recycle more effectively and create livelihoods around responsible waste management.

This is why environmental sustainability is not just about cleaning up. It is about building systems that work.

When donors and development partners invest in community based waste solutions, they can help create healthier environments, stronger livelihoods and communities that are better equipped to manage environmental challenges.

At GISD, we believe the goal should not be a cleaner community for one day.
