‎THE POWER OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN ADVANCING ACReSAL PROJECT IN BENUE STATE.

‎Over the week, the power of community engagement, as panacea for the success of programmes of Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi Arid Landscapes ( ACReSAL) in Benue North East (Zone A) was stressed.

‎The demonstration was done in communities in Vandeikya and Ushongo Local Government Areas as part of efforts to bring them to terms with developments in ACReSAL, and assess the status of ACReSAL interventions, as well as enlighten them on new eco friendly ways of doing agriculture without harming the environment.

‎While at the communities, the stakeholders including traditional and opinion leaders, and members of the communities were encouraged to continue to take care of ACReSAL interventions in their areas. Some of the interventions included Tenera Palm Plantations, Forest Plantations, Solar powered boreholes, Community Revolving Funds (CRF) enterprises among others.

‎Also at those spots, the local communities, especially the women groups were taught how to embrace eco-friendly agricultural practices, in which little or zero harm would be done to the entire ecosystem. Of those practices, Agroforestry was identified to be the modern and globally accepted way of doing agriculture, which does not require the killing of much trees or forest; but rather entailing planting or cultivating crops among tress or forest. Instead of killing trees completely, the branches are trimmed to allow sufficient sunlight down to the crops.

‎Agroforestry is useful because it combines trees with crops and livestock to provide ecological, economic, and social benefits, such as improving soil health, conserving water, increasing biodiversity, providing income and food security for farmers, prevent erosion, and provide shelter among numerous benefits.

‎These and many more were achieved through the community engagements carried out from 14th October, 2025 by Good Health Living Environmental Foundation (GOHLEF), the focal NGO carrying out ACReSAL mandate in Zone A.

‎Meeting periodically with the host communities will, in no doubt strengthen bond, and foster greater collaboration between ACReSAL and the local population, which will ultimately ensure safety of ACReSAL interventions, which will, otherwise be exposed if such interfaces were not put in place.

‎REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE

‎IMPROVING LIVELIHOODS THROUGH CLIMATE FRIENDLY AGRICULTURE

‎Have you heard that Bio char is the right substance to use when pursuing regenerative agriculture?

‎Biochar, a charcoal-like substance made by burning organic material in a low-oxygen environment, used to improve soil health and store carbon, is increasingly being used in agriculture to improve soil health and crop productivity. When applied to soil, bio char enhances its structure, increases water retention, and reduces nutrient leaching. Its porous nature provides a habitat for beneficial soil microorganisms, which can contribute to more robust plant growth. Moreover, biochar’s high stability in soil allows it to act as a long-term carbon sink, helping to mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon that would otherwise return to the atmosphere.

‎On farms, biochar can be particularly effective in degraded or nutrient-poor soils, where it helps to improve fertility and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers.

‎Crops such as spinach, maize, rice, and tomatoes often yield better when grown in soils amended with biochar, especially when combined with compost or other organic matter.

‎As interest in sustainable farming
‎ practices grows, biochar presents a promising tool for enhancing soil performance while also contributing to environmental stewardship.

‎In the video is the application of biochar to vegetables in the garden to green the leaves and improve yield.

‎ACReSAL is indeed changing the narrative.

‎TOWARDS HEALTHY FARMING

‎Earlier today at Mbakunde, Vandeikya LGA, Benue State, ACReSAL engaged the community on Regenerative Agriculture.

‎Organic manure, an essential promoter of healthy farming, which is prepared from animal feeds and dry biomass plays a crucial role in sustainable agriculture by enhancing soil fertility without the harmful effects associated with chemical fertilizers. This type of manure is rich in essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are vital for plant growth.

‎Unlike synthetic inputs, organic manure improves the soil structure, increases its water retention capacity, and encourages the proliferation of beneficial microorganisms. These improvements help crops grow more resilient to diseases and environmental stress, leading to healthier and more productive yields over time.

‎Also, the use of organic manure contributes significantly to environmental conservation. Recycling animal feed residues and dry biomass into manure reduces agricultural waste and lowers greenhouse gas emissions associated with chemical fertilizer production. It also minimizes soil and water pollution, fostering a more balanced ecosystem.

‎By returning organic matter to the soil, farmers close the nutrient loop, making agriculture more regenerative and less reliant on external inputs. In this way, organic manure supports long-term food security while preserving natural resources for future generations.

‎This is the message Good Health Living Environmental Foundation (GOHLEF), the focal NGO for Zone A is preaching for Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL).

‎DO YOU KNOW?

‎Spinach and other vegetables have significantly enhanced the livelihoods of rural women in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State by providing them with a sustainable source of income, food security, and economic independence.

‎ Through small-scale farming, many of these rural women have been able to reduce their dependence on external food sources, lower household expenses, and even participate in local markets. This agricultural engagement not only empowers them financially but also builds their skills in farming, entrepreneurship, and community leadership.

‎In many rural areas, women’s cooperatives and farming groups have formed around vegetable production, fostering social support and shared resources, which further strengthens their ability to provide for their families.

‎In addition to improving livelihoods, vegetable farming by rural women contributes to combating climate change through the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. Spinach and other leafy vegetables typically require fewer resources such as water and fertilizers as compared to large-scale commercial crops, making them environmentally friendly. They often adopt eco-friendly methods like organic composting which help restore soil fertility and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By growing food locally, they also cut down on carbon emissions associated with long-distance food transportation.

‎TOWARDS ACHIEVING ECO-FRIENDLY FUELS

‎Last week, Good Health Living Environmental Foundation (GOHLEF), the focal NGO carrying out ACReSAL programmes in Zone A of Benue State taught local communities how to do briquettes.

‎Briquettes are small brick made of compressed coal dust, sawdust, organic matter, or any substance etc, used for fuels to cook food.

‎Commonly known as the 4-target approach, we used the briquette strategy to achieve diverse ACReSAL essential environmental goals:

‎ 1. Economically, briquettes offer an affordable and sustainable alternative to traditional firewood and charcoal, reducing household energy costs while creating income-generating opportunities through local briquette production. This supports ACReSAL’s goal of enhancing rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable natural resource management in semi-arid regions. By encouraging small-scale enterprises and providing skill development in briquette manufacturing, the intervention fosters local economic resilience and reduces dependency on depleting forest resources.

‎2. Environmentally, briquettes contribute significantly to reducing deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, a core concern of ACReSAL’s climate resilience strategy. Made from agricultural and organic waste, briquettes recycle biomass that would otherwise be burned or left to decompose, thereby cutting down carbon emissions and improving air quality.

‎ 3. Socially, the promotion of briquettes encourages community involvement, especially among women and youth, in sustainable practices and entrepreneurship.

‎4. Health-wise, briquettes burn cleaner than traditional fuels, producing less indoor smoke and particulate matter, thus reducing the incidence of respiratory diseases in vulnerable populations.

‎The adoption of briquettes supports ACReSAL’s integrated approach to ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation, and community empowerment.

‎ACReSAL CONDUCTS SENSITISATION, ROUTINE MONITORING AND AWARENESS CREATION IN ZONE A.

‎The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) performed routine monitoring of plantation sites, sensitisation and awareness creation on waste to wealth in communities in Konshisha and Ushongo Local Government Areas in Benue North East Senatorial District (Zone A).

‎Also, as part of awareness creation, ACReSAL did elaborate discussionsons
‎on domestic violence including Gender Based Violence (GBV) that might arise in the course of implementation of ACReSAL programmes .

‎The tour which commenced on Saturday, 4th October, 2025 had stop overs at Dyondon, Uma 1and 2, Mbaashia 1and 2 and Kpaaye communities in Konshisha LGA. While in Ushongo LGA, sensitisation interactions were held at Sendeun-Kiki and Tse Shirsha communities.

‎At the Tenera Palm and Mahogany plantations (Forest Reserves), ACReSAL educated the people about timber and non timber forest impact of planting trees.

‎Palm Trees, which are non timber plants, and valuable source of palm oil, palm wine, and raffia, can play a crucial role in the daily lives and economies of the benefitting communities. These resources will provide sustainable income opportunities without the need to cut down trees, helping preserve the forest ecosystem. Palm oil can also be a major export commodity in Benue State, supporting millions of smallholder farmers if it is embraced. Additionally, local crafts made from palm fronds and raffia can contribute to economic resilience at the community level.

‎Mahogany, on the other hand, a timber, highly valued hardwood known for its durability, workability, and rich colour, is a premium choice for furniture, cabinetry, and boat building. And because of its diverse use, mahogany can support long-term employment or livelihoods of communities hosting their reserve as source of income.

‎On regenerative agriculture, the ACReSAL team harped on the need to embrace farming practices that would improve soil health, increase biodiversity and sequester carbon and restore the overall health of ecosystems. Unlike conventional methods that often deplete natural resources, regenerative agriculture entails minimal soil disturbance, cover cropping, crop rotation, composting, and integrating livestock to create self-sustaining systems. Its importance lies in its potential to combat climate change by capturing carbon in the soil, improving food security through healthier and more resilient crops, and revitalising rural communities by promoting sustainable livelihoods.

‎In tackling climate change, the need to abandon charcoal making, and adopt briquettes as alternative fuel was emphasised, and its production process taught, and demonstrated at the various communities.

‎Briquettes, were taught to be eco-friendly, not emitting harmful smoke into the atmosphere, thus reducing global warming. The local population was trained on how to make briquettes for domestic and commerical use, thereby enhancing their livelihoods.

‎The ACReSAL team, comprising Dr Shimakaa Iorlumun, Terungwa Orbiam, Francis Gege and Philip Asobo took turns to interact with the people inorder to achieve the targeted goals.

‎At the end of the awareness creation and sensitisation, there were interactive sessions for questions and answers, group photographs and presentation of Information, Education, and Communication ( IEC) materials, which were a strategy to promote more understanding inorder to achieve behavioural change. All these formed highlights of the tour.

‎CHANGING LIVELIHOODS THROUGH NAPIER GRASS

‎Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), also known as elephant grass, is a fast-growing, high-yielding tropical grass commonly used for livestock feed. It is well-adapted to a range of climatic conditions and soil types, making it a resilient crop for smallholder farmers.

‎Good Health Living Environmental Foundation (GOHLEF), the focal NGO carrying out ACReSAL programmes in Zone A of Benue State, last week, distributed Napier grass seedlings and seeds to local communities in the Zone.

‎With Napier grass, ACReSAL achieves not just feeding of animals, it also tackles erosion because its deep root system helps prevent soil erosion, and it can be harvested multiple times a year, providing a reliable and sustainable source of fodder.

‎Because of its high biomass production and nutritional value, Napier grass is especially beneficial for dairy and beef farmers aiming to improve animal productivity.

‎By cultivating Napier grass, local communities can significantly enhance their livelihoods, which is one of the objectives of Terms Of Reference (TOR) of ACReSAL. The increased availability of quality livestock feed leads to better milk yields and healthier animals, directly boosting household incomes.

‎Nowadays, there is increase in livestock business in Benue State, hence, Napier grass can also reduce the need for expensive commercial feed, lowering production costs. Additionally, surplus grass can be sold or processed into silage, creating small-scale agribusiness opportunities. Through improved food security, income generation, and environmental protection, Napier grass contributes to more resilient and self-sufficient rural communities.
