DAY 2 | From Learning to Action

We wrapped up Day 2 of our two-day training on Non-Discriminatory and Trauma-Informed Care for Highly Vulnerable AGYW, organized by Concerned Women International Development Initiative-CWIDI in collaboration with the Benue State Ministry of Justice

The session was highly interactive, with health workers actively sharing experiences, asking questions, reflecting on gaps in service delivery, and identifying practical ways to strengthen survivor-centred care, referral pathways, confidentiality and non-discriminatory healthcare services.

Most importantly, participants made concrete commitments and developed facility-level action plans to translate the knowledge gained into improved services for vulnerable women and girls.

Because meaningful humanitarian action is not only about responding to needs, it is about strengthening the people and systems that make lasting change possible. 💜

Day 1 | Strengthening Compassionate, Survivor-Centred Healthcare

As we commemorate World Humanitarian Day 2026 under the theme “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities.” yesterday, CWIDI, in collaboration with the Benue State Ministry of Justice commenced a two-day training for health workers on Non-Discriminatory and Trauma-Informed Care for Highly Vulnerable Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) in Benue State.

Day One provided a safe and engaging learning space for participants to deepen their understanding of gender, gender equality, GBV and violence against women and girls, while exploring the health, psychological and social consequences of GBV on AGYW.

Participants also examined the principles of survivor-centred care including safety, confidentiality, respect, non-discrimination and informed consent and how stigma and bias within healthcare settings can prevent vulnerable women and girls from seeking and accessing essential services.

Representing the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Barr. Thomas Ese, commended CWIDI for the collaboration and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to protecting human dignity, promoting equality and strengthening access to justice for vulnerable populations.

As we reflect on the spirit of World Humanitarian Day, we are reminded that humanitarian action begins with compassion, inclusion and the commitment to ensure that no one is left behind.
Together, we are strengthening systems, equipping frontline responders and working towards a healthcare environment where every woman and girl is treated with dignity, safety and respect.

At CWIDI, our work with adolescent girls and young women in IDP camps continues to show us that circumstances do not define potential. We have seen girls rise with courage, support one another through sisterhood, become peer educators, and dream boldly of becoming nurses, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and leaders.

This International Youth Day, we reaffirm our commitment to creating safe spaces where young people can learn, lead, heal, and thrive. Because when young people are empowered with knowledge, confidence, and opportunity, they become powerful agents of change in their communities.

CWIDI was honoured to pay a high-level advocacy visit to the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Timothy Yangien Ornguga, as part of our project, "Enhancing Access to Justice and Non-Discriminatory Healthcare Services for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW)."

We were warmly received by the Honourable Attorney General, who welcomed the initiative, commended CWIDI's work in advancing the rights of women and girls, and expressed the Ministry's commitment to partnering with us to strengthen access to justice and legal protection for vulnerable populations across Benue State.

The advocacy visit provided an opportunity to present evidence gathered from consultations with AGYW on barriers to healthcare and justice, while advocating for stronger implementation of the VAPP Act, enhanced legal awareness, and survivor-centred, rights-based approaches to service delivery. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to future collaboration through advocacy, capacity building, and institutional partnerships.

Strategic partnerships like these are essential to building systems that protect rights, promote gender equality, and ensure equitable access to justice for all.

Strengthening Access to Justice for Adolescent Girls and Young Women

Access to justice is fundamental to protecting the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of every Adolescent Girl and Young Woman (AGYW).

As part of our ongoing project, "Enhancing Access to Justice and Non-Discriminatory Healthcare Services for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW)," CWIDI paid a high-level advocacy visit to the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Timothy Yangien Ornguga, at the Benue State Ministry of Justice.

We were warmly received by the Honourable Attorney General, who commended CWIDI for its commitment to advancing women's rights, promoting gender equality, and improving access to justice and equitable healthcare services for vulnerable women and girls. He expressed his strong commitment to this cause and reaffirmed the Ministry's readiness to partner with CWIDI in protecting the rights of Adolescent Girls and Young Women across Benue State.

During the meeting, CWIDI presented findings from consultations with AGYW, which revealed persistent challenges including stigma, discrimination in healthcare settings, fear of reporting abuse, and barriers to accessing justice. We also advocated for stronger implementation of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (VAPP) Act, greater legal awareness, and rights-based, trauma-informed healthcare services.

The engagement concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen collaboration through advocacy, legal awareness campaigns, capacity building, and institutional partnerships that will broaden access to justice and improve protection for women and girls throughout Benue State.

Together, we are building a future where every AGYW can access justice without fear and healthcare without discrimination.

Amplifying AGYW Voices in Child Protection and GBV Prevention

At CWIDI, we believe that meaningful participation of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) in policy and decision-making processes is essential to creating safer communities.

We were proud to have one of our AGYW representatives participate in the Validation of the Child Protection/Gender-Based Violence (CP/GBV) Strategy and Review of Referral Pathways, co-hosted by the Benue State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and partners.

The meeting focused on strengthening child protection systems, preventing gender-based violence, and improving referral and reporting pathways for survivors, particularly girls living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. Discussions highlighted the importance of coordinated responses, survivor-centred justice, and the review of existing child protection policies, including the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act.

By ensuring that AGYW are represented in these important conversations, CWIDI continues to champion inclusive decision-making and advocate for stronger protection systems that safeguard the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of vulnerable girls and young women.

Strengthening Partnerships for an AIDS-Free Benue State

CWIDI was honored to participate in the Benue State HIV/AIDS State Strategic Plan (SSP) 2025–2027 Dissemination Meeting, convened by the Benue State Agency for the Control of AIDS (BENSACA) in collaboration with the Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services, with support from NACA and development partners.

The meeting brought together government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, healthcare professionals, and other key stakeholders to officially unveil the State Strategic Plan, a shared roadmap for strengthening HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services across Benue State.

As an organization committed to advancing equitable healthcare, gender equality, and the rights of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW), CWIDI is proud to be part of this collective effort to build an HIV response that is inclusive, evidence-driven, and people-centred.

Together, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting prevention, reducing stigma and discrimination, strengthening community systems, and ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to quality healthcare services.

Together, we can achieve an AIDS-free Benue State.
