Answers to the "Whys" of mental health.
1 Mental illnesses are often viewed as demon possession, spiritual attacks, etc, requiring deliverances, "hot prayers" binding and casting, etc rather than hospital attention.
2. The symptoms and signs of mental illnesses are not usually physical like we see in diabetes, sickle cell disease, asthma, etc. Mental symptoms like sadness, lack of interest, poor sleep at night, episodes of impending doom or death, hearing voices not heard by others when one is fully awake, seeing things not seen by others, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, poor reasoning and judgement come from the brain (mental origin), but it's usually difficult for people to understand or accept this fact.
3 Many prayer and deliverance houses are equally ignorant about mental health matters. In some instances they are unwilling to point the way to the hospitals, when mentally ill persons come for help because they fear loosing their trade and reputation, like the Pharisees and Sadducees did each time a new prophet comes on board.
4. In hospitals mentally ill persons and their family/friends find it difficult to submit completely to medical evaluation and treatment for same reason of demon possession, spiritual attacks, somebody is after them. Therefore they want mental health services combined with all sorts of alternative/unorthodox treatments, even in the hospitals.
Sometimes, agitated and very disturbed patients are brought to the hospital with request that they should be given injections that will make them to be calm, so they can return to the place of deliverance, binding and casting for continuation.
5. People who flock around clergymen with untreated psychotic disorders are ignorant, or may be having a similar problem, until proven otherwise. More worrisome is that such followers are unable to differentiate between illness and anointing! For other clergymen who see or know one of their own who is going about with untreated psychosis, or other mentaAnswers to the "Whys" of mental health.
