As we continue our 20th anniversary video series, we reflect on a core principle that has shaped our work over the years.

For two decades, our approach has remained consistent: working with communities, not ahead of them.

This has taught us that sustainable impact is built on listening, strengthened by trust, and sustained through shared ownership.

The most effective solutions are the ones that communities shape and lead themselves.

Strengthening Community Ownership of Borehole Facilities in Mbayev

The Benue State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, BBenue Acresalin through Community Links and Human Empowerment Initiative (CLHEI), recently carried out a community sensitization exercise in Mbayev, focusing on borehole ownership, management, maintenance, and safeguarding.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote community responsibility, strengthen local management systems, and ensure the long-term sustainability of water infrastructure provided under the project.

The sensitization aimed to deepen community ownership, encourage proper management practices, and foster a routine maintenance culture necessary for the effective functioning of the borehole facility.

The engagement brought together community leaders, elders, women, youth, and other stakeholders, creating an inclusive platform for dialogue, awareness, and collective decision-making.

Mbayev community demonstrated commendable ownership by already establishing local rules to hold individuals accountable for any actions that could damage the borehole.
This reflects a growing culture of responsibility and collective stewardship aimed at preventing misuse and vandalism.

A key outcome of the sensitization was the establishment of a five-member Borehole Management and Maintenance Committee. The committee will oversee daily operations, coordinate routine maintenance, enforce community regulations, and ensure the protection and sustainability of the facility.

The exercise recorded active participation and strong community commitment. Residents expressed willingness to support the committee and comply with guidelines for proper use and maintenance of the borehole.

Overall, the sensitization has strengthened awareness and reinforced community ownership in Mbayev. With clear accountability structures now in place, the community is better positioned to manage and sustain the facility effectively.

Moving forward, continuous engagement, periodic monitoring, and technical support will be essential to maintain functionality and ensure the long-term benefits of the borehole for the community.

Benue ACReSAL Conducts Site Evaluation Exercise at Umagh and Apeelu Communities, Tarka LGA

As part of its ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable land management and climate-resilient agriculture, the Benue State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project Benue Acresal has continued its efforts to identify suitable sites for agricultural interventions.

On April 13, 2026, a joint team from ACReSAL and the Community Links and Human Empowerment Initiative (CLHEI) conducted a field visit to Umagh and Apeelu Communities in Tarka Local Government Area.

The purpose of the visit was to assess land suitability for the establishment of tenera plantations, a key component of the project’s land restoration and livelihood enhancement strategy.

The site evaluation was carried out using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to analyze critical factors such as land characteristics, spatial distribution, and overall suitability.

The team is currently awaiting the final report from the GIS consultant, which will determine the exact size and viability of the land proposed for the plantation.

During the visit, the team was warmly received by Zaki Ahembe Mbasegh, who expressed strong support for the initiative. He guided the team through the proposed sites, offering valuable local insights and facilitating access to the land.

The successful assessment of the Umagh and Orvande sites marks an important milestone in the implementation of the Benue ACReSAL Land Restoration Initiative.

The forthcoming GIS report is expected to provide essential data to guide informed decision-making and effective project ex*****on.

Next Steps

The CLHEI team, led by the Agricultural Officer, will revisit Mbaatikyaa Community in Buruku LGA. The objective is to evaluate and measure newly allocated lands for ginger farming.

A comprehensive report will subsequently be submitted to the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) for further action.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, SITE SELECTION, AND GIS-BASED SURVEYING FOR OIL PALM PLANTATION AND AGROFORESTRY BEST PRACTICES USING GROUNDNUT AS A COVER CROP IN TARKA LGA, BENUE STATE

The Benue State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project Benue Acresal , through its implementing partner, Community Links and Human Empowerment Initiative (CLHEI), conducted a community engagement, site selection, and preliminary GIS-based surveying exercise in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.

The objective of the exercise was to promote inclusive stakeholder participation, enhance awareness of sustainable agricultural practices, and identify and accurately delineate suitable sites for the establishment of an oil palm plantation and a cover cropping initiative.

📍In Adzomun community, the team was formally received by Zaki David M. Atule, while in Mbamyar 2 community, the team was received by Zaki Terkaa Liam.

Adzomun Community: 🌴 Oil Palm Plantation Site Selection

In Adzomun community, the exercise focused on identifying and surveying a suitable site for the proposed oil palm plantation. The engagement involved consultations with community leaders, farmers, youth groups, and women representatives to ensure inclusiveness, transparency, and collective ownership of the initiative.

The CLHEI team sensitized participants on the economic and environmental benefits of oil palm cultivation, emphasizing its potential to improve household income, generate employment, and enhance long-term land productivity.

Following the engagement, a detailed field assessment and GIS-supported survey of proposed lands were conducted to determine site suitability, capture geospatial data, and clearly define boundaries. A site was subsequently selected based on key criteria, including soil quality, accessibility, land size, and community consent. The surveyed land was confirmed to be suitable for sustainable oil palm production.

📍Mbamyar 2 Community: Groundnut Cover Cropping Initiative

In Mbamyar 2 community, the activity focused on the selection and surveying of a one-hectare plot for cover cropping using groundnut. Community members were engaged and sensitized on the importance of cover cropping, particularly its role in improving soil fertility, reducing erosion, conserving soil moisture, and enhancing overall farm productivity.

Groundnut was identified as a suitable cover crop due to its nitrogen-fixing capacity and economic value. A careful field assessment and GIS-based survey were conducted, taking into account soil condition, drainage, and accessibility, while also capturing accurate spatial data of the selected plot.

At the conclusion of the exercise, a one-hectare plot was successfully selected, mapped, and mutually agreed upon by stakeholders for the implementation of the initiative.

💬 Community Response and Key Observations

The response from both communities was positive and encouraging, with participants expressing strong willingness to support and sustain the project. Community leaders pledged their commitment to safeguarding the selected sites and mobilizing local participation.

Farmers demonstrated keen interest in adopting the improved agricultural practices introduced during the engagement. Although minor concerns related to land ownership and boundary delineation were raised, these were amicably resolved through dialogue. The use of GIS tools further enhanced accuracy, transparency, and proper documentation of site boundaries.

The community engagement, site selection, and GIS-supported surveying exercise was successfully conducted and achieved its intended objectives. The identification and precise delineation of suitable sites in Adzomun and Mbamyar 2, coupled with strong community support, provide a solid foundation for the effective implementation of ACReSAL interventions in Tarka Local Government Area.

The planned establishment of the oil palm plantation and the agroforestry🌿 initiative integrating groundnut as a cover crop is expected to improve soil fertility, strengthen climate resilience, and contribute to the socio-economic development of the benefiting communities.

🚀 What Next?
Sustained community engagement, timely provision of inputs, and continuous monitoring will be critical to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the project.

Benue ACReSAL Launches Faro99 Rice Cultivation at Tyo-Mu IDP Climate-Smart Farm

Benue ACReSAL has officially commenced the cultivation of Faro 99 rice at the Tyo-Mu IDP climate-smart farm, with over 4 hectares already planted.

To ensure optimal crop performance, the team deployed tractor harrowing—an essential agronomic practice that improves seed-to-soil contact, supports moisture retention, and promotes uniform germination.

Currently, sprouted sections of the farm are being managed with selective post-emergent herbicides to control w**d growth and protect crop yield.
