World Toilet Day 2025
Theme: “Sanitation in a Changing World”

Issued by the Initiative for Water and Environmental Sustainability (IWES)

Today is World Toilet Day. A day dedicated to raising global awareness about the urgent need to accelerate access to safely managed sanitation and to confront the devastating impact of open defecation on public health, dignity, and socio-economic development across communities, states, and nations.

The 2025 theme, “Sanitation in a Changing World,” underscores the critical need to future-proof our sanitation systems. As climate change, rapid urbanization, and deepening inequality reshape our world, we must invest in resilient, inclusive sanitation solutions that serve everyone especially the most vulnerable.

Today, billions of people still live without access to a safe toilet. The burden falls heaviest on the poorest, with women and girls disproportionately affected facing daily risks to their health, safety, and dignity.

At IWES, we are proud to stand with the global community in marking this important day. We echo the call for individuals, communities, corporations, and governments to step up to close the sanitation gap, dismantle systemic barriers, and build infrastructure that not only meets today’s needs but endures for generations to come.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2025

As Nigeria joins the global community in commemorating the 2025 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, the Initiative for Water and Environmental Sustainability (IWES) underscores the critical need to address the escalating land degradation crisis. With over 350,000 hectares of arable land lost annually to desertification and 60% of Nigeria’s landmass degraded, the theme “Restore the Land. Unlock the Opportunities” resonates deeply.

Nigeria’s current restoration efforts lag behind global benchmarks, with only 6% private sector participation. IWES calls for urgent collaboration among government, businesses, and communities to scale up reforestation, sustainable irrigation, and drought-resistant farming. Aligning with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), Nigeria must prioritize policies that incentivize large-scale restoration and attract climate finance; central to achieving Nigeria’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On this World Day, IWES urges all stakeholders to act decisively. Together, we can restore Nigeria’s degraded landscapes, unlock their vast potential, and secure a sustainable future. The time to act is now.

Today is Global Handwashing Day! We are reminded again, about the critical role clean hands play in public health and global health security, specifically, through the prevention of the spread of infectious diseases, every day.

According to Global Handwashing Partnership, handwashing with soap can reduce diarrheal diseases by 30%; reduce acute respiratory infections by up to 20%; reduce the transmission of outbreak-related pathogens such as cholera, Ebola, shigellosis, SARS, hepatitis E, COVID-19, and monkeypox and is protective against healthcare-associated infections, contributes to reducing the spread of antimicrobial resistance, including the reduction of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

Handwashing with soap and water should be practised multiple times, daily, and promoted by all as a global campaign.
