THE POWER OF FOCUS
(Delivered at NUES Convention on Dec 23rd, 2025)
By Pastor Joseph Adi
1. INTRODUCTION
In a world filled with noise and endless distractions, focus has become one of the most powerful virtues. Technology and everyday worries constantly compete for attention, making many people busy yet unproductive. Amid all this, focus stands as a defining factor between those who merely exist and those who fulfill purpose. This paper explores the meaning of focus, why it is necessary, how it can be developed, and the benefits it produces in spiritual, academic, and personal life.

1. What Is Focus?
Focus is the ability to center your mind, attention, and energy on a specific purpose without being distracted by competing interests. It is choosing one clear direction and committing to it wholeheartedly.

Jesus explained focus in Matthew 6:22, saying:

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is single, your whole body will be full of light.”

In biblical terms, a “single eye” means an undivided vision. When your attention is fixed on the right goal, your entire life becomes illuminated with clarity and purpose.

Focus means:

● Having a clear and defined direction
● Eliminating distractions that compete for attention
● Choosing purpose over temporary pleasure
● Fixing your eyes on what God has called you to do
Proverbs 4:25 reinforces this idea:
“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.”

A focused life is not scattered or confused. It is intentional. Focus gives direction to effort and meaning to action. Without focus, even talent, intelligence, and opportunity are wasted.

2. Why Do I Need to Be Focused?
a. Focus Determines Destiny
Your life naturally moves in the direction of your focus. What you consistently think about, give time to, and pursue eventually shapes who you become. If your focus is on growth, discipline, and purpose, your destiny reflects that. If your focus is on distractions and instant gratification, your future suffers.

Many people pray for a better future while focusing on habits that sabotage that future. Destiny is not only determined by prayer but also by sustained attention to the right things.

b. Distraction Is the Enemy’s Strategy
One of the most effective strategies of the enemy is not destruction but distraction. If focus produces purpose, distraction produces delay.

Ephesians 5:16 says:

“Redeem the time, because the days are evil.”

Time can only be redeemed when it is used intentionally. Constant distraction wastes time, drains energy, and weakens spiritual sensitivity. A distracted person struggles to hear God clearly or act decisively.

c. Great Men and Women in Scripture Succeeded Through Focus
The Bible is filled with examples of individuals who fulfilled destiny because they remained focused:

● Joseph refused compromise despite temptation and injustice. His focus on God preserved his future.
● Daniel refused defilement in Babylon. His disciplined focus distinguished him in a corrupt environment.
● David faced Goliath with a fixed heart, ignoring fear, size, and public opinion.
● Jesus endured the cross because He was focused on the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2).
None of these individuals lived distraction-free lives, but they chose focus over comfort.
d. You Cannot Chase Everything
One of the greatest threats to focus is trying to do too much at once. Paul understood this when he said in Philippians 3:13–14:

“This one thing I do… I press toward the mark.”

Success and fulfillment come from narrowing attention, not expanding it endlessly. Focus demands sacrifice—letting go of good things to pursue the right thing.

3. How Do I Get Focused?
A. Set Clear Goals
Focus begins with clarity. You cannot focus on what you have not defined. Clear goals give direction to effort. These goals should be spiritual, academic, and personal.

When goals are vague, effort becomes weak. Clear goals sharpen discipline and help measure progress.

B. Remove Distractions
Distractions drain time, energy, and motivation. These may include:

● Excessive phone and social media use
● Unproductive friendships
● Constant entertainment
● Negative environments
Focus requires intentional removal of anything that pulls attention away from purpose. Discipline begins with subtraction.

C. Guard Your Mind
What enters the mind shapes what holds your focus. Thoughts influence actions, and repeated thoughts become habits.

Scripture teaches believers to guard their hearts and minds carefully. Feeding your mind with truth, wisdom, and positivity strengthens focus, while constant exposure to negativity weakens it.

D. Build Strong Spiritual Habits
Prayer, studying the Word, and fellowship sharpen spiritual clarity. A spiritually unfocused person often struggles with life focus.

Spiritual disciplines quiet noise, align priorities, and keep purpose clear. When your spirit is aligned, your life follows.

E. Choose the Right Friendships
Proverbs 13:20 says:

“He who walks with the wise will be wise.”

Your circle influences your focus. Friends who lack direction often become distractions. Focused people grow faster when surrounded by disciplined and purpose-driven individuals.

F. Practice Discipline
Focus is not built overnight; it is developed through consistent, disciplined actions. Discipline trains the mind to resist distraction and remain committed to goals even when motivation fades.

Focus grows stronger the more it is practiced.

4. What Are the Benefits of Focus?
i. Clarity and Direction
Focused people know what to do and when to do it. Decisions become easier because priorities are clear.

ii. Speed and Productivity
Focused effort produces faster and better results. Scattered energy leads to burnout, while concentrated effort leads to progress.

iii. Excellence
Focus refines skill. Repetition, attention, and commitment produce mastery. Excellence is the reward of sustained focus.

iv. Spiritual Strength
A focused believer is powerful in prayer and effective in purpose. Spiritual authority flows from alignment and discipline.

v. Better Academic Performance
A focused student learns more efficiently, retains information better, and performs with confidence. Focus improves understanding and results.

vi. Fulfillment of Destiny
Every biblical hero fulfilled purpose through focus. Destiny is not accidental—it is the product of deliberate attention to God’s calling.

vii. A Brighter Life
Jesus promised that when the eye is single, the whole body will be full of light. Focus brings peace, joy, confidence, and fulfillment.

Conclusion
As believers and students of life, we are called to fix our eyes forward, eliminate distractions, and pursue what God has placed before us. When focus becomes a lifestyle, light fills every area of life, and destiny is fulfilled.

Nigeria’s Future Depends on Restoring Truth

In every generation, societies rise or fall on the strength of their moral foundations. Among these foundations, truth stands as the bedrock of trust, justice, and progress. When truth is diminished, communities crumble under the weight of deceit, corruption, and mistrust. Sadly, in today’s Nigeria, truth is increasingly treated as relative—adjusted to suit convenience, hidden when it is uncomfortable, or even bought and sold for political or personal gain.
The erosion of truth has far-reaching consequences: broken families, disillusioned youth, compromised leadership, and weakened institutions. The question before us is urgent: How do we restore the value of truth?
Personal Integrity: Truth Begins With Me
The first step to restoring truth is to look inward. Every man and woman must take responsibility for speaking and living truthfully. Integrity is not simply about avoiding lies; it is about aligning words and actions so they mirror reality.
In our markets, many Nigerians have grown accustomed to being cheated by traders who use false weights, adjusted fuel pumps, or watered-down products. In workplaces, records are often falsified, and in schools, students rely on exam malpractice rather than hard work. These may appear “small” acts, but collectively they destroy trust and progress.
The restoration of truth begins not in grand speeches, but in daily choices.
Families: The First School of Truth
The family is the foundation of society, and within it children first encounter the lessons of honesty. A child who hears his father lie on the phone—“tell him I am not at home”—or sees his mother inflate prices in the market, silently learns that dishonesty is acceptable.
If we are serious about restoring truth, our homes must become sanctuaries of honesty. Parents must model integrity by keeping promises, admitting mistakes, and correcting lies rather than excusing them. A truthful family produces a truthful generation.
Communities and Leadership
Beyond the family, communities and leaders shape cultural attitudes toward truth. In Nigeria, politics has become a theatre of deception. Campaign promises are made with no intention of fulfillment, and propaganda is used to manipulate public opinion. Leaders are too often praised for their cunning rather than their honesty.
This dangerous inversion of values must be corrected. Leaders in government, religion, business, and civil society must be held accountable. Citizens, too, have a responsibility: to demand truth from leaders, not just handouts or fine speeches. Without this, leadership will remain corrupt.
Institutions Must Uphold Truth
Strong institutions are the pillars of a truthful society. Yet many of our institutions are weakened. Some schools turn a blind eye to examination malpractice. Courts are accused of “judgment for sale.” Sections of the media bend the truth for “brown envelope” journalism. Even religious platforms sometimes place prosperity above truth and accountability.
To restore truth, institutions must reclaim their integrity. Schools must raise students who value honesty. The judiciary must deliver justice without fear or favor. The media must resist sensationalism and uphold facts. And the church and mosque must preach and live out truth, not just convenience.
Truth as a Culture
Nigeria suffers from a culture that mocks honesty and celebrates dishonesty. A corrupt official is hailed as “smart,” while a straightforward man is dismissed as “foolish.” This is a sickness that must be cured.
We must celebrate truth-tellers, protect whistleblowers, and encourage open dialogue. Honesty must once again become honorable. Communities must become places where lies are confronted, not tolerated.
The Spiritual Dimension
Scripture reminds us: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Truth liberates us from corruption, fear, and deception. When a society loses its reverence for God, conscience is dulled, and falsehood becomes easy to justify.
Nigeria needs a revival of the fear of God and respect for conscience. Religious leaders must call their congregations back to truth—not only in sermons but in daily conduct. Faith that tolerates lies is faith without power.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
Restoring the value of truth is not an abstract ideal; it is a practical necessity for Nigeria. Each of us must begin with ourselves, commit to building truthful families, hold leaders accountable, strengthen institutions, and foster a culture where truth is celebrated.

Lies may offer quick rewards, but they always lead to long-term destruction. Nations that cherish truth endure; those built on falsehood collapse. Let us choose truth—not because it is easy, but because it is the only path to genuine freedom and lasting progress.

The Power of Desire.

A speech presented by Pst.Engr. Joseph Ejekwenye Adi.
At the national Union OF Etulo Students National Secretariat
Annual Convention 2024.
Held on Monday 23rd December, 2024
Greetings to the Chairman, Guest speaker, Patron, and President of the National Union of Etulo Students. I recognize and appreciate all existing protocols as I proceed.
Today, I want to explore the transformative power of desire, particularly in the pursuit of academic excellence. Although a desire can be defined as an earnest wish, it is more than just a wish; it is a burning obsession, a definitive purpose that compels us to act. Napoleon Hill, in Chapter 2 of 'Think and Grow Rich,' describes desire as “the starting point of all achievement.” He emphasizes that a well-defined goal and unwavering effort are essential for turning this burning desire into reality.
Every accomplishment begins with a spark—an intense longing that refuses to be extinguished. It is not to be confused with a nagging thought. It may start as a thought but we must grow it and make it more than a thought for us to be able to live in the realities of our desire. So our thoughts carry unlimited potential and our only limitations are the ones we set up in our mind. And it’s not just about thinking we must be able to see ourselves actualizing those desires. Genesis 13:15 (KJV) states, “For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed forever.” Just as God encouraged Abraham to see the vastness of his potential, we must also open our minds to the possibilities that lie ahead. Academic success requires us to see beyond our current circumstances and imagine the heights we can reach. Until we break away from small mindedness and acknowledge that even the forces of nature cannot stand against our desires, our reality will be far from our potential.
The bible reiterates severally the power of desire. In Mark 11:23-24 (KJV), Jesus said, “For verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore, I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” These verses capture the essence of desire, faith, and unwavering belief. When we deeply desire success and align it with unshakable faith, we create the momentum to achieve the extraordinary. In academics, this principle applies profoundly. It begins with a specific and clear goal: excelling in your studies, attaining that degree, or mastering a subject. A vague desire to "do well" will not suffice; you must define your ambitions with clarity. For instance, do you desire to top your class or excel in a particular field? Name it, and then visualize yourself achieving it.
However, desire alone is not enough. Napoleon Hill outlines six steps to turn desire into reality: First, be specific about your goal. Second, decide what sacrifices you are willing to make to achieve your goal. Third, set a deadline for achieving your objective. Fourth, develop a concrete plan and begin immediately. Fifth, write down your goal, and finally, read it aloud daily, envisioning its fulfillment. Mark 11:24 urges us to act as if we have already received what we long for. This mindset shifts our focus from our failures to our inevitable success. Academic excellence demands more than just intellectual effort—it requires resilience and persistence. Challenges such as difficult exams, limited resources, or personal setbacks test our commitment. Yet, just as faith without works is dead, so too is desire without diligent effort. It is essential to take consistent, deliberate steps toward your goals, reminding yourself daily of why you began this journey.
In conclusion, the power of desire lies in its ability to inspire action and instill belief. By combining clear goals with unshakable faith and relentless effort, you can achieve remarkable feats in your academic pursuits. Let us fuel our aspirations with determination and take bold strides toward excellence. Remember, as the scriptures affirm, with desire and faith, academic excellence is possible.
Thank you.
