Militant insurgencies in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin regularly dictate the operational tempo of battles with national armies through surprise attacks, rapid mobility, and outmaneuvering of government forces. This has resulted in heavy civilian and military casualties and the loss of territory.

In our latest Africa Security Brief, “Revitalizing Integrated Tactical Units to Combat West Africa’s Irregular Militant Groups,” General (Ret.) Dr. Fatai Alli calls for revamping the operational force structures of West African militaries—optimizing the integration of mobility, ISR, and decentralized logistical support capabilities—to regain the initiative and more effectively combat irregular militant forces.

1. Diplomatic Engagement (Immediate): Nigeria should send a formal protest (Note Verbale) to Burkina Faso demanding an immediate release and consular access to the soldiers.

2. ECOWAS & AU Intervention: Involve ECOWAS and the African Union to increase pressure. She should request their mediation to secure a quick release of the detained soldiers and the aircraft.

3. Involve ICAO (Aviation Authority): Nigeria should notify ICAO that the aircraft landed due to emergency/technical issues. She should use international aviation rules to argue that the soldiers should no longer be detained.

4. Propose a Joint Technical Investigation: Offer a joint investigation into the emergency landing. Request that soldiers be released while the investigation continues.

5. Back-Channel Negotiation: Use quiet diplomatic channels to negotiate without escalating public tension.

6. Avoid Military Escalation: Maintain calm public communication.
No threats, no counter seizures, avoid worsening the crisis.
