Topic: THE TIV MAN
The Tiv are the most predominant and homogeneous cultural group occupying the Benue Valley. They have a very interesting history. There are many views about the origin of the Tiv people, but it is widely believed that they are of Bantu stock, originating from the Congo.
History has it that Tiv and his two sons, Ichongo and Ipusu, together with their descendants, first became aware of their Tiv identity at Swem, currently located in the Republic of Cameroon. It was at Swem that the Tiv began the struggle to assert their independence, maintain and preserve their basic social and political institutions, while also fostering peaceful coexistence with their neighbours. Due to population growth, socio-economic and religious challenges, coupled with wars, they eventually left Swem, crossed the Cameroon Mountains, and settled on the plains of Benue.
The Tiv lived there for a considerable period and maintained peaceful social and economic relations with their neighbours. However, this cordial relationship was eventually disrupted, probably because of economic interests, leading to war, from which the Tiv emerged as the most dominant group in the area.
Generally, the Tiv constitute a highly cultured nation. Their concept of culture and nationhood is deeply interwoven and well expressed in their social organization. Traditional Tiv society holds genealogy in high esteem, as it connects individuals to their ancestors.
Moreover, a Tiv man typically has dark brown skin and fine facial features. He is generally tall, friendly, and hospitable. The Tiv are excellent farmers and skilful craftsmen. They are blessed with an intelligent and productive human resource base, as well as abundant agricultural and mineral resources. Indeed, the Tiv are a blessed people.
The uniqueness of Tiv culture continues to amaze many people. They have, if not the best, certainly one of the finest traditional attires in Africa. Tiv culture is indeed beautiful, rich, and unique.
