For families affected by fire outbreaks, shelter means more than a roof, it represents safety, dignity, and the opportunity to begin again.

ZOA continues to support 123 affected households with emergency shelter kits containing essential construction materials to help families rebuild temporary shelters and restore safer living conditions after the fire incident in Monguno Local Government Area, Borno State through ZOA internal Funding.

Each household received essential shelter materials including timber, tarpaulins, nails, hinges, locks, handles, and other construction items required to support immediate shelter recovery needs.

The intervention was carried out in collaboration with community volunteers and stakeholders, ensuring an organized, transparent, and peaceful distribution process.

For many families, the support provided immediate relief and renewed hope during a difficult moment of recovery.

ZOA continues to work alongside communities and partners to deliver timely humanitarian assistance that supports recovery, resilience, and dignity for crisis-affected populations.

Across Monguno Local Government Area, 254 families affected by the fire outbreak continue to rebuild their lives in the face of loss.

ZOA through its internal funding provided Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) to support affected households, enabling them to meet their immediate needs with dignity and choice.

For many, this support offers more than financial relief. It brings a sense of stability, hope, and the ability to take the first steps toward recovery after a difficult experience.

Cash-based assistance remains a vital tool in humanitarian response, helping families respond to their most urgent priorities while restoring confidence and resilience.

While progress is being made, many more families still require support.

ZOA remains committed to standing with communities, ensuring that those affected by crises are not left behind.

For many women, access to water is not just a daily task, it is a responsibility that shapes how their families live and cope.

In parts of Northeast Nigeria, particularly in Borno State, women and girls often spend hours each day walking long distances to fetch water, limiting time for livelihoods, childcare, and education.

ZOA is implementing WASH intervention alongside communities to improve access to safe water and promote practices that support healthier and more resilient households.

ZOA’s commitment remains unshaken to delivering dignified, life-saving solutions that strengthen resilience and restore hope.

Limited access to safe water and sanitation, particularly in crisis-affected settings, continues to contribute to the spread of water-borne diseases in communities across Northeast Nigeria.

Through these efforts, community members are supported with relevant knowledge and simple, actionable practices that can be applied in their daily lives, contributing to safer environments and improved health outcomes, especially for children.

In 2025 alone, ZOA reached 145,546 people with WASH support across Monguno and Bama LGAs, contributing to improved access, safer practices, and healthier environments.

By strengthening both awareness and behavior, these interventions play a key role in building healthier and more resilient communities.

ZOA remains committed to delivering life-saving interventions that support dignity and long-term well-being.

Strengthening disaster preparedness at the Local Government Area level requires coordinated systems, localized data, and continuous improvement.

ZOA in collaboration with implementing partner Smiling Heart Initiative (SHI) hosted European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) donor monitoring visit engaging Local Government Authorities, Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs), Ward Level Disaster Management Platforms (WLDMPs), and community structures in Wurno Local Government Area and Bodinga Local Government Area, Sokotot State.

The mission assessed Early Warning Systems (EWS), CBDRM, and anticipatory action interventions, validating field results, identifying coordination gaps, and strengthening last-mile early warning dissemination through LEMCs and WLDMPs.

This engagement reinforces accountability, adaptive programming, and locally led preparedness systems.

In a community of Borno State, change is taking root, one household at a time.

Through the Cash Assistance for Food project, community members like Garba Bukar have gained practical knowledge on nutrition, infant and young child feeding (IYCF), hygiene practices, and gender-based violence awareness, transforming not only individual households but the wider community.

Today, families are making more informed decisions, preserving nutritious crops for household consumption, adopting improved feeding practices, strengthening hygiene behaviors, and fostering more peaceful and inclusive family relationships.
These changes are contributing to improved child health, reduced disease outbreaks, strengthened household resilience, and enhanced community cohesion.

While stories like Garba’s reflect the impact of sustained humanitarian support, many communities across Northeast Nigeria still require access to life-changing knowledge and services.

ZOA remains committed to working alongside communities to promote dignity, resilience, and lasting change.

In Borno State, many families continue to navigate the impact of displacement, economic hardship, and recurring shocks.

For Muhammed Bashir, a father and small-scale trader, life once centered around farming and stability. But like many others, insecurity forced his family to flee, leaving behind their home and livelihood. Starting over in an IDP camp came with new challenges, limited income, food insecurity, and uncertainty.

When a recent fire outbreak further disrupted life in the camp, the situation became even more fragile.

ZOA, through it's internal funding provided Non-Food Items (NFIs) and Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) support that helped households like Muhammed’s meet their most urgent needs and regain a sense of stability.

These interventions are enabling families to cope with immediate challenges, protect what remains, and begin rebuilding their lives step by step.

Muhammed’s story reflects the resilience of many communities across Northeast Nigeria. While progress is being made, many families remain in need of continued support.

ZOA remains committed to delivering timely, needs-based assistance that restores dignity, strengthens resilience, and supports recovery.

Strengthening disaster preparedness requires collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.

During the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) donor visit in Sokoto State, ZOA convened key disaster preparedness stakeholders, including the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Ministry of Budget and Planning, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Ministry of Environment, the Red Cross, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), alongside implementing parter Smiling Heart initiative (SLH) to strengthen integrated Early Warning Systems (EWS) and enhance multi-hazard monitoring, risk analysis, and the dissemination of climate and hydrological information.

The engagement provided a strategic platform to reinforce inter-agency coordination, improve data sharing and forecasting, and ensure that early warnings effectively translate into early actions at both state and community levels.

Discussions further focused on advancing and operationalizing Anticipatory Action Frameworks (AAF), aligning early action triggers, and integrating risk-informed planning processes to enable timely, evidence-based, and coordinated responses.

This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to strengthening resilience and reducing the impact of climate-related shocks through proactive, system-based disaster preparedness approaches.
