Before the Numbers

Before a number becomes a statistic, there is a person behind the work that made that number possible.

Someone who stays a little longer to make sure a child gets the care they need.

Someone who sits with a community through difficult conversations and creates a space where people feel safe enough to speak.

Someone listening to communities as they navigate challenges that can affect their health, safety and ability to thrive.

Someone helping families find ways to cope today while building resilience for what tomorrow may bring.

Humanitarian work is often measured in numbers, people reached, children supported, communities engaged.

But behind every figure are people who showed up, listened, adapted, solved problems and kept going.

This World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate the people behind the response, the ones who turn concern into action and difficult realities into possibilities.

Because every number tells us how many.

Hope does not always arrive loudly. Sometimes, it is found in the courage to keep going, the belief that better days are possible, and the determination to keep making room for change.

Real change starts with listening to the people at the heart of the community.

Elela-Care Humanitarian and Development Organisation, in partnership with Royal Heritage Health Foundation (RHHF), convened a community town hall meeting in Mega Camp, Agan, Benue State, bringing together community members, youth and women representatives, IDPs, host communities and key stakeholders to discuss protection, SRH, GBV, social cohesion and youth participation.

The dialogue created a safe space for communities to share their concerns, identify barriers to accessing essential services, explore practical solutions and make commitments towards strengthening peaceful coexistence and building safer, more inclusive communities.

We sincerely appreciate UNFPA Nigeria for its generous support and Heritage Health Foundation (RHHF) for the partnership and collaboration in making this engagement possible. Together, we continue to create spaces where communities can speak, participate and lead solutions that promote protection, dignity and peaceful coexistence.

Peace is more than the absence of violence it’s dignity, inclusion, trust and opportunity.

And yes, young people have a BIG role to play.

Elela-Care recently took this conversation to the airwaves through an interactive radio programme in Benue, engaging young people and communities on peacebuilding, protection, SRH and GBV.

From rejecting hate speech and misinformation to speaking up against GBV, joining community dialogues and using our voices for good peace building isn’t just for community leaders. It’s for us too.

Because young people aren’t just beneficiaries of peace.
We’re partners. We’re advocates. We’re peacebuilders.

What if the words we casually say are the very words making someone afraid to speak?

They finally find the courage to say, “I’m not okay.”

And what they hear is:
“Just be strong.”
“Others have it worse.”
“You’re overreacting.”
“Why can’t you just be happy?”

Words may seem harmless, but they can leave someone feeling unheard and dismissed.

This International Youth Day, as we celebrate different contexts and common aspirations, let’s remember that every young person deserves to feel heard, understood, and supported.

Choose empathy. Listen without judgment. Because mental health matters, and so do our words.

POV: You came for the cooking demonstration and left with nutrition knowledge.

That’s exactly the point.

Today’s cooking demonstration wasn’t just about what goes into the pot. It was about understanding why it goes in, how different foods contribute to a child’s nutrition, and how women can turn everyday ingredients into healthier meals for their families.

When women have the opportunity to learn together, the knowledge doesn’t stay at the demonstration it goes home, into the kitchen and onto the plates of their children.

A big thank you to our donors and partners, the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF)- OCHA Funds and FRAD Foundation, for supporting opportunities like this and helping make practical nutrition knowledge accessible to women in the community.
