It is easy to move on from a painful story when it is not happening in our own home.

We read the news, feel sorrow, say a prayer and return to our routines. Meanwhile, the people in that story must continue living with what happened.

Hebrews 13:3 calls believers to remember those who suffer as though we were suffering alongside them.

This is not a call to carry every tragedy alone or to live in constant sadness. It is a reminder that the suffering of others should not become insignificant simply because we are far away.

For LayFaithful, remembering means keeping persecuted and displaced Christians in our prayers, supporting practical relief and helping ensure their stories are not forgotten.

May our compassion outlast the moment we first hear their stories.

It is possible to speak beautifully about love and still walk past someone who needs it.

We can quote Scripture about compassion and remain indifferent to another person’s pain. We can pray for people and never consider whether there is something practical we can do to help.

James challenges us to look beyond what we profess and examine how we live.

This does not mean every problem is ours to solve. It means our faith should move us towards compassion, generosity, justice and service wherever we have the ability to make a difference.

Sometimes the response is financial support. Sometimes it is showing up, speaking up, offering practical help or refusing to forget those who are suffering.

Faith is not only what we believe. It also shapes what we do with what we believe.

Not everyone who needs help knows how to ask for it.

Some people have learned to carry their burdens quietly. Some have been overlooked for so long that they no longer expect anyone to notice. Others are doing their best to rebuild their lives after circumstances they never chose.

In Genesis 16, Hagar encountered God in a moment when she was vulnerable and alone. She discovered something powerful: even when people fail to see you, God does not.

As Christians, that truth should shape how we see others.

Who around us needs to be seen, heard, remembered or supported?

May we learn to look beyond what is familiar and notice the people whose needs are easy to overlook.

A single relief visit cannot end persecution.

One food distribution cannot permanently solve hunger.

One financial contribution cannot rebuild every home or restore everything a community has lost.

But does that mean we should do nothing until we can do everything?

No.

The support offered to Rev. Dachomo and his community in Barkin Ladi was one intervention in the face of enormous need. It could not undo the tragedy, but it provided practical assistance and reminded affected Christians that others stood with them.

That is why consistent compassion matters.

One person helps. Another gives. Someone else prays, advocates or mobilises support. Together, these acts become part of a wider response.

First Corinthians 15:58 encourages believers to remain steadfast, knowing that their labour in the Lord is not in vain.

Do not despise the good you can do simply because more good is still needed.

The needs around us can feel overwhelming.

There are people in need of food, families searching for stability, communities longing for safety, and individuals trying to find hope after painful experiences.

We may not have the power to change every circumstance. We may not even know where to begin.

Philippians 4:6–7 invites us to bring our concerns before God in prayer, with thanksgiving, trusting Him with what weighs on our hearts.

But trusting God does not require us to become indifferent to the world around us.

We can pray without pretending the needs do not exist. We can serve without believing that everything depends on us. We can do our part while trusting God with the outcome.

May His peace steady our hearts and guide our actions.

There is nothing wrong with bringing your own needs before God.

A family going through a difficult season.

A friend waiting for an answer.

A community facing hardship.

Someone whose name you haven’t heard in a while.

Bring them before God.
