In humanitarian work, listening starts with being present where people are living through the realities we seek to address.

During a field engagement under the SAFE project, Hanny Shammah our Programs Lead, met with women leaders to listen to their experiences, concerns and priorities. They spoke about the everyday challenges affecting women, children and families, and the support they believe their communities need most.

For Media Communication for Health and Development Initiative these conversations matter. They help us look beyond statistics, understand the human realities behind community needs and work with local leaders to shape responses that are practical, relevant and dignified.

We believe stronger humanitarian action begins with listening, grows through partnership and delivers with communities at the centre.

How do we prevent another cholera outbreak in Borno State?

‎That was the focus of an evidence-based dialogue convened by the Borno State Primary Health Care Development Board in collaboration with UNICEF Nigeria and partners, bringing together health actors, media stakeholders, community voices and young U-Report Nigeria in Maiduguri.
‎
Media Communication for Health and Development Initiative (‎MECOMHEDI) contributed its strategic health communication expertise, supporting the use of mass media, community messaging and trusted local voices to strengthen outbreak prevention.
‎
‎For Borno State and across, preventing the next outbreak requires more than a health response. It requires evidence, trusted information, community ownership and coordinated health communication.

Communities are showing us where the gaps are. We are listening, assessing, and acting.

Through the SAFE Project, Joy Gabasa and Joshua are engaging directly with communities to identify priority public health needs, including limited access to safe water, gaps in essential health services, and other barriers affecting community wellbeing.

These conversations are more than assessments. They are helping us understand what communities need, what is working, and where targeted support can make the greatest difference.

At Media Communication for Health and Development Initiative, we believe sustainable solutions begin with communities. We are turning community voices and evidence into locally responsive health and WASH interventions that strengthen systems, improve access to essential services, and support communities to build resilience.

Because lasting impact begins by listening to the people we serve.

Strengthening a health system is not only about building capacity. It is about ensuring that people can actually reach, trust, and use the services that system provides.

Humanitarian and health partners have continued to strengthen healthcare delivery in Borno State. But sustainable impact requires us to keep listening, identifying gaps, and responding to the realities communities face.

That is why Media Communication for Health and Development Initiative joins the SRH Technical Working Group in convened a roundtable dialogue to examine barriers to contraception and other essential SRH services, identify service gaps, and strengthen locally responsive solutions.

Because a stronger health system means little if essential services remain out of reach for the people who need them most.

Independence is not only about freedom. It is also about building a Nigeria where school children can learn without fear of abduction, where families are not forced from their homes, and where communities affected by conflict, displacement, poverty, and humanitarian crises can live with dignity, safety, and hope.

As Nigeria marks another Independence Day and welcomes a new month, MECOMHEDI joins millions of Nigerians in reflecting on the people whose courage, sacrifices, service, and commitment helped shape the nation we celebrate today.

From the streets to the markets, we took vital health information directly to the street of Maiduguri. What looked like music, movement and celebration was more than a walk, it was a community engagement for healthier lives.

We joined partners to mark World Contraception Day 2026 by engaging people in public spaces and markets with practical information on contraception, healthy choices and access to reproductive health services.

This is what community action looks like: bringing information closer, amplifying voices, strengthening awareness and ensuring that no one is left behind. For us, access to quality health services is essential to enabling individuals and families to make informed decisions about their health.

Earlier this week, Borno State Primary Health Care Development Board, UNFPA Nigeria, World Health Organization (WHO), midwives, health responders (students), humanitarian organizations and other partners to commemorate Contraception Week 2026 at Fati Ali Modu Sheriff Primary Health Care Centre in Maiduguri.

The engagement brought young midwives, health workers and partners together to create awareness, address misconceptions and promote informed conversations around contraceptive choices and reproductive health.

From Borno to the wider Northeast, young people are not waiting to be invited into the future. We are already building it through our voices, ideas, partnerships and actions.

Youth-led organizations from across Northeast Nigeria gathered at the Youth in Crises Confab 4.0 in Yola, creating a powerful space for young people to connect, share ideas and shape conversations around the challenges affecting their communities.

We were honored by the presence of the First Lady of Adamawa State, whose engagement with young people reinforced the importance of creating meaningful platforms where youth voices are heard, valued and connected to decision-making.

Borno State was strongly represented, with youth-led organizations actively participating in the conversations, bringing frontline experiences, community perspectives and practical ideas from conflict-affected communities.

“An outbreak does not begin with a statistic. It begins where people lack the tools, information and safe water to protect themselves.”

Across communities in Borno State, MECOMHEDI’s WASH team continues to engage households and local leaders to understand gaps affecting access to safe water, hygiene and outbreak prevention.

These engagements are showing a clear need: communities want to protect their families, but many still lack reliable access to safe water and the resources needed to prevent and respond to disease outbreaks.

We are calling on donors, partners and stakeholders to invest in locally led WASH solutions that can expand access to safe water, strengthen hygiene practices and support communities to become more resilient to outbreaks.

Safe water is not a luxury. It is a foundation for healthier, safer communities.
