In many communities, fathers are stepping forward as champions of nutrition, hygiene, and child well-being. They are known as Lead Fathers, they are volunteers who dedicate their time to educating fellow fathers on the importance of proper nutrition, child care, and healthy household practices.

To support their efforts, GHIV Africa, under the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) Save the Children International Nutrition Project, distributed mats and liquid soap to Lead Fathers across project communities.

This is more than just a distribution of items.

The liquid soap serves as a powerful reminder that regular handwashing can prevent illnesses such as diarrhea and infections which often constitute common threats that often worsen malnutrition among children.

The mats provide clean and safe spaces where families can care for infants and young children, reducing exposure to dirt and unhygienic conditions.

Most importantly, these items recognize and appreciate the commitment of Lead Fathers who continue to serve as role models, encouraging positive behavior change in their homes and communities.

When fathers practice and promote good hygiene, healthy feeding habits, and proper child care, children are more likely to grow healthier, stronger, and better protected from disease.

Every mat spread on a clean floor. Every hand washed with soap. Every father empowered to lead.

Together, these simple actions are helping build healthier families and brighter futures for children. United Nations OCHA Nigeria UNHCR Nigeria

Real change begins when communities are not just heard, but empowered to lead.

In Konduga Local Government Area, GHIV Africa recently brought together traditional rulers, youth leaders, women leaders, religious leaders, persons with disabilities, and other key stakeholders to kick-start the IRC-SIDA-funded project, ”Client-Centered Humanitarian Response: Improving Lives of Crisis-Affected People.”

What makes this initiative different is its approach. Rather than seeing crisis-affected people as beneficiaries alone, the project places them at the heart of every decision. Their voices, experiences, and priorities will help shape interventions that are responsive, inclusive, and sustainable.

As the project expands across Konduga and Magumeri LGAs, it goes beyond Nutrition to also address critical needs in WASH and Health, ensuring a more holistic response to the challenges faced by vulnerable communities.

The strong participation of Bulamas, Limans, women, youth, and persons with disabilities sends a powerful message: when communities are actively involved from the beginning, humanitarian action becomes more effective, more dignified, and more impactful.

Because the best solutions are often found within the communities themselves.

Adamu sits quietly in a remote area in Borno State where there are limited access to social amenities;
and yet, hope arrives in the palm of a mother's hand.
Not in a syringe. not in a hospital bed. Not in a complicated machine.
But in a small sachet called RUTF – Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food.

This life-saving peanut-based paste is packed with the nutrients a severely malnourished child needs to recover and thrive. No water. No cooking. No refrigeration. Just open, feed, and save a life.

For thousands of families living far from health facilities, RUTF brings treatment directly into homes, empowering mothers to fight Severe Acute Malnutrition safely and effectively.

Every sachet tells a story of a child regaining strength, a mother finding hope and a family getting a second chance.
This is more than food. This is survival.
This is dignity. This is community-based nutrition in action.

GHIV Africa has continued to reinforce its commitment to safeguarding children through strong systems, accountability, and skilled frontline workers’ protection.

With our robust partnership with Save the Children, Nigeria, a 3-day training of support groups lead parents (Mother-to-Mother and Father-to-Father) under the SCI-NHF Humanitarian Response Project was carried out at Armani Event Center, Argungu Road, Borno State.

The training focused on life-saving integrated health and nutrition for children and women with acute malnutrition, with practical sessions on how children should be fed, including the right timing of meals and the importance of balanced diets (incorporating various food groups). The session was highly interactive, and participants asked many questions to deepen their understanding of appropriate feeding practices.

Participants were equipped with skills to improve infant and young child feeding (IYCF) , enhance dietary diversity, strengthen caregiver knowledge on meal timing, and promote better nutrition service delivery at the household level.
