Borno sickle cell Care foundation in collaboration with Hospital management board organized a capacity building workshop for secondary health workers in Maiduguri...
The Borno State Hospital Management Board, in collaboration with the Borno Sickle Cell Care Foundation (BSCCF), have successfully organized a one-day intensive capacity-building workshop on Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Management and Genetic Counselling for Secondary Healthcare Providers.
The workshop was designed with the overarching objective of strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers in the areas of screening, diagnosis, treatment, and genetic counselling for SCD and other inherited blood disorders.
This initiative was informed by the recognition that not all healthcare providers possess the requisite expertise and technical competencies for effective management of SCD patients. In response to this gap, the Global Action Network for Sickle Cell and Other Inherited Blood Disorders provided grant support to its member organizations across the North-East region of Nigeria, including Borno, Yobe, and Bauchi States. Epidemiological evidence indicates a high prevalence of sickle cell traits and disease within these regions, thereby necessitating targeted interventions to improve healthcare delivery outcomes.
The workshop featured six comprehensive training modules delivered by experienced haematology specialists, including Dr. Ridhwan Aliyu Tukur, Dr Hadiza Said Ngamdu, Dr.Yajaru and Dr. Yakura Abba Kawu. The sessions covered critical aspects of SCD management, with a strong emphasis on practical approaches to genetic counselling and patient-centered care.
A total of fifty (50) healthcare providers were nominated and invited through the Borno State Hospital Management Board from various secondary healthcare facilities across Maiduguri.
Participating health institutions included State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri (host venue), Umaru Shehu Ultra-Modern Hospital, Yerwa Primary Health Care Centre, and Mamman Shuwa Memorial Hospital.
