Today, we celebrate the people who choose to show up.

Humanitarian workers are often the ones behind the scenes travelling difficult roads, listening to communities, responding to needs, protecting children, supporting families and helping people access the services and rights they deserve.

It is not always easy. But every day, humanitarian workers continue to serve with compassion, courage and commitment, because behind every response is a person who needs to know that they are not alone.

This World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate the dedication of every humanitarian worker and the communities who inspire us to keep going.

To everyone who serves humanity: thank you for showing up, standing with people and making a difference

At our Nutrition Facility in Koibe clinic, Koibe community, Dikwa LGA, every child’s recovery journey matters.

Through the Outpatient Therapeutic Program (OTP) and one-on-one counselling sessions, we are supporting children affected by malnutrition while working closely with caregivers to strengthen their knowledge of breastfeeding, child nutrition, and healthy feeding practices.

Because when caregivers are empowered with the right information, children have a better chance to grow healthy and recover well.

A strong humanitarian response is built on trust, accountability, and the voices of the communities we serve.

This is why our Complaints and Feedback Mechanism (CFM) remains a vital part of our commitment to ensuring that every community member has a safe, accessible, and confidential way to share concerns, provide feedback, ask questions, and contribute to improving the quality of services they receive.

At Mudu Kaza, Dikwa LGA, we facilitated a CFM awareness session with women and women with special needs, creating a platform to strengthen understanding of available complaint and feedback channels and the importance of utilizing them.

The session emphasized that community feedback is not only welcomed but is essential in promoting transparency, accountability, and responsive programming.

By empowering community members to speak up and be heard, we continue to foster a culture where concerns are addressed, feedback informs decision making, and humanitarian assistance remains people centered, inclusive, and accountable.

As part of the World Breastfeeding Week celebration, we joined mothers to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and maternal nutrition.

Breastfeeding is more than simply feeding a baby; it requires the right knowledge, support, and guidance. From initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and practicing exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, to ensuring proper positioning and attachment, every step plays a vital role in a child's healthy growth and development.

We also highlighted the importance of mothers’ comfort during breastfeeding. Correct positioning and attachment not only help babies feed effectively but also reduce strain on mothers, preventing unnecessary back, neck, and shoulder discomfort.

The day was filled with meaningful conversations, learning, and shared experiences. While World Breastfeeding Week is a dedicated time to raise awareness, supporting mothers and giving every child the best start in life is a responsibility that extends far beyond a single week.

Trauma is often the wound no one can see, yet it can shape how we think, feel, and relate to others every day. When left unaddressed, trauma can affect emotional well-being, relationships, and a person's ability to cope with life's challenges.

At our Positive Parenting Space in Modu Kaza Community, Dikwa LGA, caregivers participated in a Trauma Awareness Session designed to deepen their understanding of trauma, its effects on children and families, and practical ways to provide emotional support and care.

The session encouraged participants to recognize signs of distress, build empathy, and create safe, nurturing environments where children can heal, grow, and thrive.

Through positive parenting approaches, caregivers were equipped with knowledge and skills to strengthen family bonds and promote the well being of children.

A wheelchair can mean the difference between staying at home and moving around independently.
A hearing aid can help someone reconnect with family and community.
A pair of walking stick and eyeglasses can make everyday tasks easier.

For many persons with special needs, these aren’t just assistive devices they’re practical tools that support daily life and greater independence.

Protection without Borders recently distributed over 350 assistive devices comprising of wheelchairs, crutches, walking sticks, eyeglasses, and hearing aids to people with special needs across Damagum, Dogon Kuka, Mashio, and Ngelzerma communities in Fune LGA, Yobe State.

The distribution was carried out under the Inclusive Access and Dignified Participation of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Services in Fune LGA, Yobe State project, helping beneficiaries improve their mobility, communication, and access to essential services and opportunities.

We appreciate the funding support of OCHA Funds in making this intervention possible.

As part of our program to strengthen positive parenting practices and promote the psychosocial wellbeing of parents and caregivers, a Positive Parenting Session was conducted with participants focusing on the topic: How I Help Me / How I Present Me at Benisheik, Kaga LGA.

The session provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on selfcare, emotional wellbeing, self awareness, and the importance of how they present themselves in their interactions with children, families, and the wider community.

By strengthening the wellbeing and capacity of parents and caregivers, we contribute to creating safer, more supportive, and nurturing environments where children can grow, learn, and thrive.

With the funding support from UNICEF Nigeria, these sessions are helping to bridge the gap in knowledge, support and practice among caregivers while promoting the psychosocial wellbeing of families and communities.

Every great achievement begins with a single step.

When women are empowered, families thrive and communities grow stronger.

With funding support from OCHA Funds and in partnership with lead consortium partner Street Child of Nigeria, Protection Without Borders supported Amina Tijjani with a small scale provision stall to strengthen her livelihood and build a more secure future for her family.

This empowerment goes beyond business it is about restoring hope, strengthening resilience, and creating opportunities for families.

One woman empowered.
One family strengthened.
One community moving forward.
