The Development Initiative of West Africa (DIWA), in partnership with civil society organizations (CSO) groups in the state, carried out an advocacy visit to the Anaja -Gaku of Ganaja, Women Christmas Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN), and Jamaatu Nasirl Islam (JNL). The purpose of the visit was to engage them on proper strategies for preventing gender-based violence (GBV). As highly respected opinion leaders within their communities, their influence plays a crucial role in shaping attitudes and promoting positive behavioral change among their subjects. Prevention is actually the concern. Let us start now! damage control is not advisable.

REPORT ON PIBCID CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING AND FREE MEDICAL OUTREACH HELD ON 13TH APRIL 2026 AT GHANAJA VILLAGE, LOKOJA KOGI STATE.

1. Introduction
On 13th April 2026, PIBCID organized a capacity building training on quick response to health-related issues, alongside a free medical outreach, at Ghanaja Village, Lokoja, Kogi State. The programme was designed to strengthen community resilience, improve health awareness, and provide immediate access to basic medical services.

2. Objectives of the Programme
The training and outreach programme aimed to achieve the following:
To build community capacity in identifying and responding promptly to health-related emergencies.
To raise awareness on preventive healthcare and early detection of diseases.
To provide free medical tests and basic treatment to underserved rural populations.
To encourage behavioural change towards proactive health-seeking practices.
To strengthen community-health linkages for improved long-term health outcomes.

3. Description of Activities
3.1 Capacity Building Training
The training session focused on equipping participants with practical knowledge and skills to handle common health challenges. Key areas covered included:
Recognition of early symptoms of common illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, and infectious diseases.
First response techniques and basic first aid practices.
Importance of routine medical check-ups.
Community-based health reporting and referral systems.
This aligns with PIBCID’s broader approach of empowering communities through knowledge transfer and participatory engagement. The organization has consistently implemented similar capacity-building initiatives across Kogi State to improve community wellbeing.

3.2 Free Medical Outreach and Testing
The medical outreach component provided essential health services to residents of Ghanaja Village, including:
Blood pressure checks
Blood sugar (glucose) tests
Screening for hepatitis B and C

Participants diagnosed with health concerns were given immediate medical advice and, where necessary, basic medications or referrals for further treatment. Similar outreach efforts by PIBCID have shown that many rural residents often discover underlying conditions such as high blood pressure only during such interventions.

4. Participation and Beneficiaries
The programme recorded active participation from:
Community members (men, women, and youths)
Local leaders and stakeholders
The turnout demonstrated increased community awareness and willingness to engage in health improvement initiatives. Rural populations, who often lack access to affordable healthcare services, were the primary beneficiaries of the outreach.

5. Outcomes and Impact
The training and outreach yielded significant outcomes:
Improved awareness of common health conditions and their early warning signs.
Enhanced community capacity to respond quickly to health emergencies.
Early detection of illnesses, particularly hypertension and blood sugar abnormalities.
Increased health-seeking behaviour among participants.
Reduced financial burden on community members through free medical services.
The initiative contributed to behavioural change by encouraging individuals to prioritize their health, and improved quality of life.

6. Challenges Encountered
Despite the success of the programme, some challenges were observed:
Limited medical supplies relative to the high turnout of participants.
Need for continuous follow-up for individuals diagnosed with chronic conditions.
Logistics constraints in reaching remote areas.

7. Lessons Learned
Key lessons from the programme include:
Community-based health interventions are highly effective when combined with awareness campaigns.
There is a strong demand for regular medical outreach in rural areas.
Capacity building enhances sustainability by enabling communities to take ownership of their health.
Early detection programmes significantly reduce the risk of severe health complications.

8. Recommendations
To sustain and expand the impact of such initiatives, the following are recommended:
Regular organization of similar outreach programmes in underserved communities.
Strengthening partnerships with government health agencies and NGOs.
Provision of more medical equipment and supplies for future programmes.
Establishment of community health volunteers for continuous monitoring.
Increased funding to scale up interventions across more rural communities.

9. Conclusion
The capacity building training and free medical outreach held on 13th April 2026 at Ghanaja Village, Lokoja, was a highly impactful intervention that addressed critical health needs within the community. Practical healthcare services, and capacity building programme successfully enhanced awareness, promoted behavioural change, and improved access to essential medical care.
Such initiatives remain vital in bridging healthcare gaps in rural Nigeria and advancing community development through informed and proactive health practices.
