As part of the events marking this year’s World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), Safer-Media Initiative will host a virtual roundtable under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security"

This year’s theme offers an opportunity to reflect on ongoing efforts to promote press freedom as a cornerstone of human rights, development, and security. It underscores the reality that journalism—when free, safe, and sustainable—plays a vital role in conflict prevention, informed public debate, social cohesion, and democratic governance. Conversely, when press freedom is undermined, peace, sustainable development, and human rights are structurally compromised.

The roundtable will bring together members of the journalism community to examine the challenges facing independent media in Nigeria and explore practical solutions to strengthen media ecosystems.
