Since 2000, Community Conservation and Development Initiatives (CCDI) has worked to ensure the effective protection and management of natural and man-made environments, with a focus on alleviating poverty through sustainable development in Nigeria. Through support from the Ford Foundation and the Heinrich Böll Foundation, CCDI has worked in partnership with governments, communities, and other stak
eholders to implement numerous local initiatives. Past projects have involved areas such as social forestry, rainwater harvesting, waste management, land tenure, livelihood building, women’s issues, the urban environment, and environmental education. CURRENT PROJECT: “Mobilising Local Governments for Climate Action”
CCDI’s main project over the past three years—funded by a grant from the Heinrich Böll Foundation—is entitled “Mobilizing Local Governments for Climate Action”. We have been working in close partnership with three local governments in Lagos to build capacity for appropriate climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. The problems in Lagos’ communities are many, including the use of wetland resources beyond maximum sustainable levels and threats to communities in coastal areas due to rapid erosion. Developing businesses often encroach on natural habitats and coastal communities; all the while, indiscriminate drainage of wetlands leaves resources lacking. Furthermore, improper waste disposal continues to exacerbate flooding during the rainy season—a problem which only threatens to get worse. Through this project, CCDI is working to tackle these issues by building the capacity of local governments to act, and by empowering communities to become increasingly climate change resilient.
