Episode 2: Mama Dupe's House of Advice
Mama Dupe had unofficially crowned herself the patron saint of widows. Every time someone lost a husband in the neighborhood, she was the first to arrive with stew and unsolicited advice.
Today was no different. She had three stops to make: one for Sister Chika whose husband of 2 months had just passed, another for Madam Bose who wouldn’t stop crying, and finally, Ruth.
She adjusted her head tie, picked up her black handbag (a gift from her late husband 12 years ago), and marched out like a general heading to battle.
"A widow must not be pitiful; she must be powerful," she declared to herself.
Her first stop was Sister Chika.
"You must not cry too much o," Mama Dupe began. "Crying attracts monitoring spirits. If you must cry, cry into nylon and tie it."
Chika blinked. "Tie the tears?"
"Yes. And don’t let people see you wear wrapper anyhow. Comb your hair. Mourning is not madness."
She handed Chika a sachet of groundnut. "Chew this when people come. It will keep your mouth from saying things you’ll regret."
Her next stop was Madam Bose. Bose was in her 60s but wept like a teenager in a breakup.
"Madam Bose! Enough! You want to follow him? If you cry too much, your BP will rise, then you will join him!"
Bose sniffed. "He promised to take me to Dubai."
"And you still want to go? Did he promise to send flight money from heaven?
Better enter church instead."
Finally, Mama Dupe landed at Ruth's again, uninvited.
"Ruth, you need to bath. I said it yesterday. Grief is not body lotion."
Ruth laughed so hard she choked on her tea.
"Mama Dupe! Can you let me grieve in peace?"
"No! Because grief is a thief. It will steal your peace, your beauty, and your sense. I won’t let it."
She pointed at Ruth's hair. "Tomorrow, I’ll take you to Sister Shade to braid. That way, your enemies will know you’re still alive."
And with that, she left as dramatically as she came, leaving the scent of menthol rub and wisdom behind.
