It is a day to reflect on the journey of our democracy, celebrate the voices and sacrifices that have strengthened our nation, and renew our commitment to the ideals that promote inclusive development.

On this International Day of Play, we recognize the importance of play as an integral part of a child's development. Through Play, children learn to forge connections with others, build a wide range of leadership skills, develop resilience, navigate relationships and social challenges, and conquer their fears.

In Nigeria, Play is often seen as an afterthought and a reward system for good behavior, which is caused by the numerous socioeconomic conditions. We believe that a child should never get to choose between play and serious business, because Play is not the opposite of learning; it is how children learn.

At ATLAS Initiative, this understanding shapes our wider work with children and young people. Through the Access to School project, we work to re-enroll out-of-school children while advancing a vision of education that restores dignity, belonging, and childhood.

In this week's article, we examine Nigeria's proposed $3.5 billion investment in post-harvest storage and question whether the strategy is targeting where food losses actually occur. While the government is prioritizing silos, cold rooms, and refrigerated transport, evidence suggests that many losses happen much earlier in the value chain—during harvesting, processing, storage, and handling by smallholder farmers.

The article argues that reducing food loss requires greater investment in practical, community-level solutions such as storage bins, solar dryers, processing equipment, and improved handling systems, particularly for women who play a central role in food production and processing. Using insights from the SEED Project in Lagos and Ogun States, we highlight the need for a more targeted approach that follows the crop, the stage of loss, and the people most affected.

The key message is clear: Nigeria not only needs more post-harvest infrastructure; it needs a post-harvest strategy grounded in the realities of smallholder farmers and food processors.

As we mark World Environment Day under the theme "A Global Call for Climate Action," let us move beyond awareness to action by adopting sustainable practices, advocating for environmental responsibility, and working together to build a greener, more resilient future.

Atlas Initiative is empowering women farmers in Nigeria through its SEED project (Sustainable Empowerment for Economic Development) supported by the Islamic Development Bank through the Tadamon Accelerator Food Security Grant.

This project will support women farmers with direct market access tools, and climate-smart agronomy to increase their profits and reduce harvest loss. This is part of our effort to address climate change issues in Nigeria.

In this week's article, we explore the recent attacks on schools in Oyo and Borno States and what they reveal about the evolving nature of insecurity in Nigeria's education sector. These incidents raise concerns that threats to schools are no longer confined to the North-East but are increasingly affecting other parts of the country.

While the government has introduced initiatives such as the Safe Schools Declaration and the National Plan on Financing Safe Schools, many schools still lack adequate security measures. Reports suggest that more than 60,000 schools across Nigeria remain vulnerable to attacks, kidnappings, and other security risks.

With over 18 million children already out of school, persistent insecurity continues to undermine access to education. The situation underscores the urgent need for stronger school protection strategies, improved intelligence gathering, and greater community involvement in safeguarding learning environments.

Progress in society is built on a willingness to learn, adapt, and improve. For organisations, institutions, development partners, and stakeholders, achieving a meaningful impact requires more than good intentions—it necessitates continuous reflection and improvement.

As communities evolve and new evidence emerges, we must be willing to reassess our approaches, strengthen our interventions, and adopt better practices. What worked yesterday may not be sufficient for today's realities, and sustainable development depends on our ability to learn from experience and apply those lessons effectively.

Whether in education, governance, health, climate action, or community development, the most impactful initiatives are often those that embrace innovation, learning, and adaptation.

ATLAS Initiative calls for a national child-safeguarding compact that treats school abduction as an urgent child-protection emergency with educational, psychosocial, and family-support consequences.

The compact must connect community early warning, safe reporting, school protection, psychosocial recovery, learning continuity, family communication, and public accountability.

Children’s Day 2026 should mark a shift from ceremonial recognition to measurable protection, because no Nigerian child should lose safety, schooling, or life to a system that hears official promises more clearly than children’s warnings.

Today, as we celebrate Children’s Day in Nigeria, we must also reflect on the realities facing millions of Nigerian children.

Over 18.3 million children are currently out of school, with about 66% concentrated in the North-West and North-East regions. Nearly 40% of children under five are stunted due to chronic malnutrition and prolonged nutritional deprivation.

Insecurity continues to threaten education, with repeated school attacks, abductions, and forced school closures creating fear and uncertainty for many children. According to UNICEF, one in three Nigerian girls is married before the age of 18, while child mortality remains alarming, with many children unable to survive beyond their fifth birthday.

These are not just statistics; they are the lived realities of millions of Nigerian children.

As we celebrate today, we call on the government, the international community, development partners, and all stakeholders to take urgent action to protect, educate, and secure the future of every Nigerian child.

Happy Children’s Day to every child in Nigeria. May we build a nation where every child is safe, educated, healthy, and allowed to thrive.
