We’re Live!

Today’s convening brings together regulators, public health experts, and consumer advocates to address a critical issue: the presence of added sugars in baby cereals and what it means for child nutrition and consumer protection in Nigeria.

This is a necessary step toward stronger standards, greater accountability, and healthier outcomes for our youngest population.

Be part of this important convening.

Did you know that what a baby tastes early in life can shape what they prefer for years to come?

According to the World Health Organization (2023), early dietary exposure influences later food preferences and health outcomes. So, what happens when that early diet quietly includes added sugar?

Reports by UNICEF and Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (2024 NDHS) show that Nigeria has the second highest burden of stunted children in the world, with approximately 32% to 40% of children under five experiencing stunted growth due to malnutrition.

Tomorrow, Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF) is taking this conversation to the decision-making table, where we will engage regulators, experts, and advocates on the urgent need to strengthen standards, improve transparency, and move toward zero added sugar in baby cereals.

Across Nigeria, growing concerns around added sugar in baby cereals are raising important questions about nutrition, regulation, and consumer protection. Many parents assume baby cereals are safe and healthy, but how accurate is this assumption?

Recent findings from an investigation conducted in partnership with Public Eye show that some baby cereals sold in African markets contain added sugars, while similar products in Europe do not. This raises serious concerns about product standards, transparency, and the level of protection for Nigerian consumers.

While current national standards may permit certain sugar levels, there is a growing need to reassess these frameworks to better align with global health recommendations.

At Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF), we believe every child deserves a healthy start. In response to this, we are convening a high-level stakeholder engagement pushing for Zero-Sugar in Baby Cereals. This convening will bring together regulators, public health experts, and consumer advocates to examine the current landscape, identify gaps, and explore practical solutions toward safer and healthier food options for infants and young children.

Together, we can call for accountability and protect the most vulnerable consumers.

Air pollution is a global public health emergency. The World Health Organization (2022) reports that 99% of the world’s population breathes air that exceeds the recommended guideline limits, contributing to approximately 7 million premature deaths each year.

In Nigeria, this crisis is even more pronounced.

We are exposed to generator fumes, traffic emissions, waste burning and industrial activities daily, leaving us at the risk of respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and other long-term health conditions.

In commemoration of World Earth Day 2026, themed "Our Power, Our Planet", Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF) is bringing this conversation to the forefront through a webinar themed: “Air Pollution: The Invisible Killer.”

This session will bring together key stakeholders to examine the real impact of air pollution on public health, highlight existing gaps in awareness and policy, and discuss practical pathways for improving air quality and protecting consumers.
