Across Nigeria, growing concerns around added sugar in baby cereals are raising important questions about nutrition, regulation, and consumer protection. Many parents assume baby cereals are safe and healthy, but how accurate is this assumption?
Recent findings from an investigation conducted in partnership with Public Eye show that some baby cereals sold in African markets contain added sugars, while similar products in Europe do not. This raises serious concerns about product standards, transparency, and the level of protection for Nigerian consumers.
While current national standards may permit certain sugar levels, there is a growing need to reassess these frameworks to better align with global health recommendations.
At Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF), we believe every child deserves a healthy start. In response to this, we are convening a high-level stakeholder engagement pushing for Zero-Sugar in Baby Cereals. This convening will bring together regulators, public health experts, and consumer advocates to examine the current landscape, identify gaps, and explore practical solutions toward safer and healthier food options for infants and young children.
