Our Summer Chess Class has been off to an awesome start, and we’re excited to see the kids learning, exploring, and having fun!

From being introduced to the fundamentals of Chess to mental math skills through the use of the abacus, the children are building valuable skills while enjoying every moment of the experience.

It has been amazing watching the kids engage with new concepts, challenge themselves, and grow with each session. And we’re only getting started! 🚀

Today, we celebrate Rachael Pamilerin Kehinde—our first-ever Female Chess Champion.

Rachael's story is one of courage, resilience, and determination. After her family's home was demolished, they were forced to live under a bridge in Isale Eko. Yet even in the face of unimaginable hardship, Rachael never stopped believing her future could be different.

From the moment Rachael join the project, she became one of the most dedicated learners any coach could hope for always attentive, endlessly curious, and determined to improve.

On the eve of the tournament, while many others were distracted, Rachael stayed behind for one final lesson. She spent over 30 minutes mastering the Scholar's Mate opening. The very next day, she used it to defeat an older, more experienced opponent on her way to becoming not only the tournament champion but also the first female champion in Chess in Slums Africa's history.

She also came first in the Mental Math Competition, Her victory wasn't luck. It was the reward for consistency, resilience, and the courage to believe that every move mattered.

Rachael currently is enrolled at where she continues to pursue her education and build a brighter future.

Her story reminds us of what chess has always represented for Us: a language of confidence, a tool for critical thinking and a pathway to possibility.

This World Chess Day, we celebrate Rachael and every child who has discovered that one move can change everything.
