Our Story

The Inspire Community Network, formerly known as Kate Tales Foundation, is a nonprofit that was founded in 2012 by girls and women’s leadership coach; Kate Ekanem. The motivation to develop rural communities, retell forgotten stories and challenge stereotypes that are constantly oppressing girls and women emerged from Kate’s personal experience as a young girl, born into a community and a family where financial instability resulted to multiple deaths, including her mother’s. Because she grew in a community where victims of r**e were publicly shamed, and girls were married out early to fund extended families’ debts, while education for girls was a major threat, expensive and unachievable, Kate started on a journey to find solutions to all the challenges that crippled her community. Inspire Community started as Kate Tales Foundation, and it was all about Kate’s journey to transforming her community, but along the years, the dream that started with one person, expanded and transcended across all the regions in Nigeria, and abroad.

Inspire Community Network (ICON) is now made up of coordinators from diverse backgrounds that work to develop solutions to pressing challenges in their local communities. ICON promotes girls education, women empowerment and emerging writers’ development in South-South, North-Central, South-East and South-West Nigeria, West Africa, and North America. Coordinators learn to share their stories, practice the act of volunteering, and create a change in their communities, while also working on a cultural exchange program to work with other communities- to learn and exchange cultural values.
