Protecting Child Domestic Workers in West AfricaStarts Now. ✊🌍

MAEJT Nigeria just hosted a major 2-day regional summit in Lagos supported by the Freedom Fund focused on ending Child Domestic Work & Forced Labour.

From government agencies to survivor leaders, one message was clear:
No tradition or hardship should justify child exploitation.

Highlights:
🔹 Call for stronger enforcement of child protection laws
🔹 Clear distinction between chores and exploitation
🔹 Survivor-led solutions and advocacy
🔹 Growing regional unity for a Joint Declaration

MAEJT Nigeria has already helped 200+ children return to safety these past years but we won’t stop until every child is free from exploitation.

United To End Exploitative Child Domestic Work in West Africa 🌍✊

MAEJT Nigeria brought together child protection champions from across West Africa for a powerful 2-day summit in Lagos titled “West Africa Convening on Child Domestic Work and Forced Labour.”

The workshop supported by the Freedom Fund, opened honest conversations about the realities children face behind closed doors, the gaps in policy enforcement, and the cultural norms that often hide exploitation.

Some major insights from the convening:

✨ Government action is key. Stakeholders called for enforcement of the Labour Act and implementation of ILO Convention 189.
✨ Child chores VS child labour. Children helping at home is not the same as being made to work long hours without rest, education, or safety.
✨ Survivors must lead the change. Their voices shaped discussions on solutions and community interventions.
✨ Regional unity is rising. Delegates worked toward a shared declaration to end exploitative child domestic work across West Africa.

MAEJT Nigeria has already reintegrated over 200 children these past years, but the work continues and we are stronger together.

Let’s keep speaking up, protecting children, and building a region where no child’s dream is stolen.

MAEJT Nigeria convened a high-level dialogue with local authorities and traditional leaders to strengthen community-based implementation of child protection laws, with a particular focus on addressing the exploitation of child domestic workers in Lagos communities. The engagement created a platform for collaboration between traditional institutions, local government representatives, and civil society actors toward the domestication and enforcement of child protection frameworks at the grassroots.

Key Highlights:
Community Engagement: The dialogue brought together local authorities, traditional leaders, and representatives from Makoko and Lagos Island communities to discuss the realities and vulnerabilities of child domestic workers.

Awareness on Legal Frameworks: Participants examined the gap between the existence of child protection laws at the state level and their poor implementation at the community level.

Call for Localization: MAEJT Nigeria emphasized the need to domesticate and publicize child protection laws so that communities are aware of their content and implications.

Expert Insights: Representatives from Devatop Center for Africa Development highlighted key child rights often violated, including the rights to education, healthcare, and protection from maltreatment.

Community Commitment: The event concluded with a collective resolve from community leaders and stakeholders to promote awareness, vigilance, and reporting of child rights violations.

The dialogue reaffirmed that protecting child domestic workers requires collective responsibility—raising awareness, enforcing laws, and ensuring that no child is left behind in the pursuit of safety, dignity, and opportunity.

On this World Literacy Day, we are reminded that literacy is the foundation of a child’s growth and lifelong development. The theme, ‘Promoting literacy in the digital era,’ challenges us to ensure every child can read, write, and thrive in a changing world. When children are empowered with literacy, they gain the keys to knowledge, creativity, and opportunity.

Activity Highlight – Door-to-Door Sensitization in Olowogbowo, Lagos Island

Date: 27th August, 2025

MAEJT Nigeria carried out a door-to-door sensitization exercise in Olowogbowo community, Lagos Island, with the aim of promoting the protection of child domestic workers (CDWs) and mobilizing households to collectively combat their exploitation.

During the exercise, households were sensitized on:

The rights and protection needs of children, including child domestic workers.
The negative impact of overwork, maltreatment, and denial of education.
The responsibility of households and the community to ensure a safe environment for children.

The sensitization reached 50 households and business owners, with many residents responding positively, appreciating the awareness, and pledging to adopt safer and more protective practices. Some also suggested we extend our scope to market outreach to monitor and report suspected cases of abuse.

The exercise significantly increased awareness within Olowogbowo and fostered stronger community commitment to end the exploitation of child domestic workers.
