MAEJT Nigeria convened a high-level dialogue with local authorities and traditional leaders to strengthen community-based implementation of child protection laws, with a particular focus on addressing the exploitation of child domestic workers in Lagos communities. The engagement created a platform for collaboration between traditional institutions, local government representatives, and civil society actors toward the domestication and enforcement of child protection frameworks at the grassroots.
Key Highlights:
Community Engagement: The dialogue brought together local authorities, traditional leaders, and representatives from Makoko and Lagos Island communities to discuss the realities and vulnerabilities of child domestic workers.
Awareness on Legal Frameworks: Participants examined the gap between the existence of child protection laws at the state level and their poor implementation at the community level.
Call for Localization: MAEJT Nigeria emphasized the need to domesticate and publicize child protection laws so that communities are aware of their content and implications.
Expert Insights: Representatives from Devatop Center for Africa Development highlighted key child rights often violated, including the rights to education, healthcare, and protection from maltreatment.
