African Students Football Union Ltd/Gte Mourns our Ambassador Prince Peter Rufai
Abuja, Nigeria – July 4, 2025 – The African Students Football Union (ASFU) and the entire Nigerian football fraternity deeply mourn the profound loss of Prince Peter Rufai, affectionately known as ‘Dodomayana’. He passed away at 6:00 AM on Thursday, July 3, 2025, after a brief illness, at the age of 61.
Dodomayana was not just a legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper; he was a revered Ambassador of ASFU and a staunch advocate for the "town and gown" philosophy. He truly believed football, the “opium of the people,” could bridge divides and foster holistic development, seamlessly integrating academic pursuit with community engagement.
His contributions to Nigerian football are etched in history, from his commanding presence to his iconic leadership. He was a cornerstone of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and our debut FIFA World Cup journey. Beyond the pitch, Prince Rufai championed initiatives that nurtured young talent, ensuring student-athletes were not just stars but well-rounded individuals.
The ASFU extends its deepest condolences to the Rufai family and the countless fans. We have lost a legend, a mentor, and a friend. His legacy will inspire generations to pursue dreams with passion and integrity, echoing the "town and gown" philosophy he so dearly upheld.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
