It was a great honour to be a panelist at the just concluded "Women in Transport Conference ' organized by the Global Transport Policy at the prestigious Mariott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State Nigeria
The conference was called upon to discuss 'championing inclusive agenda for women in the Nigerian transport industry.- Mindset plus skill set" I applauded the efforts of the convener Regina ROBINSON and the chairman Dr Segun MUSA in arranging such an important gathering of thought leaders in the value chain of the transport industry in Nigeria - rail ,road ,air ,land and water transportation
I was happy to share some of the challenges facing women in the maritime industry and the importance of having women in decision making positions in the industry.I shared the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) solution,- the establishment of Women in Maritime' Associations worldwide -the latest being the Women in Maritime of West and Central Africa(WIMOWCA )where I am President of the Nigerian branch (WIMOWCA NIGERIA) It was thrilling to see the likes of Olufumilayo OLOTU the dynamic retired manager of the Lagos Ports Complex Apapa share her success story and emphasized the fact that she stood on the shoulders of eminent women Port Managers such as Carol UFERE who did an amazing job at Port Harcourt..There were students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions so it was important to discuss mentoring and role models.I was delighted to meet Capt Ibironke ROTIMI- OLAJIDE the first female pilot in Africa to fly the. Embraer 195-E2 aircraft It was indeed a very rewarding conference
