She didn't choose to stay home. Nobody told her education wasn't important. Nobody convinced her that her future didn't matter.

But the barriers were bigger than her desire to learn.

Here are 5 things that stop children, especially girls from getting the education they deserve:

✓ School fees and hidden costs
It's not just tuition. It's uniforms, textbooks, exam fees, and levies that pile up and price families out.

✓ Distance
For many children in underserved communities, the nearest school is miles away with no safe or affordable way to get there.

✓ Child labour
When a family is struggling, a child's hands become an economic resource. School takes a back seat to survival.

✓ Early marriage
For many girls, reaching a certain age means being married off and educated girls are sometimes seen as a threat, not an asset.

✓ Disability without support
Children with disabilities are often kept home because schools aren't equipped to include them.

She wanted to go, the system just wasn't built to let her in.

Where you were born, what your parents earned, the community you grew up in. None of these things should determine how far you go in life.

But for millions of people in Nigeria, they do.

The child who couldn't go to school because fees weren't paid. The person with a disability who was never given access to opportunity. The family is stuck in a cycle they didn't choose and can't seem to escape.

They didn't choose their circumstances. But they deserve the chance to rise above them.

Every individual, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance deserves a fair shot at life. Because potential has no address.

This month, show up for someone who needs you. Speak up for someone who can't. Do something, no matter how small, that makes a real difference in someone's life.

Most people think early childhood education just means keeping a child busy before primary school starts.

But it's so much more than that.

Between birth and age 5, a child's brain develops faster than at any other point in their life. Every experience, every word they hear, every interaction they have, is shaping how they think, feel, and learn for the rest of their life.

Early childhood education builds:

✓ Language and communication skills:
children who are read to and spoken with early develop stronger vocabularies

✓ Social skills:
learning how to interact,share, and cooperate with others

✓ Emotional development:
understanding and managing feelings

✓ Cognitive skills:
problem solving, curiosity, and critical thinking

For children in underserved communities, access to quality early childhood education is often the first thing that gets skipped. And that gap follows them all the way through school.

The foundation matters and it starts earlier than most people think.

We live in a world that celebrates the big moments.

The viral post. The massive donation. The grand gesture.

But most of the change that actually transforms communities happens quietly.

It's the teacher who stays after school for a struggling child. The neighbor who makes sure the family next door has food. The volunteer who shows up to an outreach not for the photos but because they genuinely care.

It's the small, consistent, unglamorous acts of showing up that move the world forward.

At JAF, we celebrate that kind of change. Because we've seen what it does to a community when someone simply refuses to look away.

We treat inclusion like it's a favour.

Like accommodating a person with a disability is something to be celebrated. Something extra. Something generous.

But it's not. It's the bare minimum.

Every person, regardless of ability, background, or circumstance deserves to fully participate in the world around them. In schools, in workplaces, in communities, in conversations.

When we treat inclusion as kindness, we make it optional. And optional means some people will always be left out.

It's not optional. It's not charity. It's right.

And until we start treating it that way, we will keep celebrating the bare minimum like it's something remarkable.

We love to tell children to work hard. Dream big. Keep going.

But motivation means very little to a child who doesn't know if they'll eat today, or if anyone is coming for them at all.

Safety comes before inspiration. Stability comes before success.

In Nigeria, thousands of children are carrying weights no child should carry, alone, unsupported, and invisible to the systems that were supposed to protect them.

They don't need a speech. They need someone to show up for them.

There's a difference between sympathy and action.

Sympathy says "that's so sad" and keeps scrolling.

Action says "what can I do?" and actually does something.

The people in underserved communities across Nigeria are not looking for anyone to feel sorry for them.

They are looking for basic things that many of us take for granted every single day.

✓ A child that can go to school and actually learn.
✓ A family that doesn't have to choose between food and rent.
✓ A person with a disability that can move through the world without barriers.

These are not big asks. They are human asks.

Last Saturday, we were in Ede, Osun State.

In conjunction with , we offered free blood sugar and blood pressure tests to 100 people in the community, people who may not have had access to this otherwise.

To every volunteer who showed up and gave their time we are truly grateful. You made this possible. 💜

And this is just the beginning. We're looking forward to doing even more for the communities that need us.
