2026 – International Day for Street Children
At Grace Springs Rehabilitation, we pause to honour the resilience of street-connected children.
The 2026 global theme “Protect, Not Punish” hits close to home. Too often, children living or working on the streets of Lagos are harassed, arrested, or chased away for simply trying to survive. Sleeping under a bridge, hawking to eat or loitering because home isn’t safe – these are not crimes. They are cries for help. A child is anyone below 18. And every child has rights: to education, healthcare, shelter, food, leisure, and protection from harm. Rights the world promised them. Rights Nigeria’s Child Rights Act affirms.
But rights also come with responsibility – for all of us. As a community, we are responsible for creating systems that rehabilitate, not punish. That offer counselling instead of cuffs. School instead of the streets.
This past month, the Grace Springs Rehab team has engaged with children across Oshodi, Mushin and neighbouring states. We heard stories of courage. We saw dreams that refuse to die. “D…”, 16, wants to be an engineer. “Ble…”, 18, just wants to be a hairdresser. “S” wants to return back to school. “J…” wants to continue his skill acquisition.
To law enforcement, policymakers, churches, mosques, and every resident of Lagos: These children are not “area boys” or “menaces.” They are our children. Let’s give them justice, not judgment.
How you can help today:
1. Don’t look away – Greet them. See their humanity.
2. Report abuse – If a child is in danger, speak up.
3. Support rehab – Volunteer, donate or partner with us.
4. Spread the word – Share this post
At Grace Springs Rehabilitation, we’re committed to rescue, restore and reintegrate. One child at a time.
Because a street is not a home. And every child deserves a future.
