October is LGBTIQA+ History Month. Here's what it is and who started it.

It's a month for learning and teaching the LGBTQIA+ history most classrooms skip. Not a holiday, not a law: a tradition. It began in 1994 with Rodney Wilson, a high school history teacher in Missouri who came out to his class during a lesson on the pink triangles the N***s forced on gay prisoners.

He chose October for the 1979 and 1987 Marches on Washington and for National Coming Out Day, Oct 11. Today 20 countries hold an LGBTIQA+ history month.

It matters more now. In 2025 the National Park Service cut "transgender" and "q***r" from the Stonewall National Monument website. History we don't teach can be erased.

So teach us one name: who's an LGBTIQA+ person from history everyone should know? 👇🏳️‍🌈
