We’re pleased to spotlight Yolanda Lannquist, a featured speaker at the AI Ethics Summer School 2026, Third Edition.

Yolanda serves as Global Governance Lead at Windfall Trust, where she works on AI economic preparedness with national governments, central banks, and multilateral institutions. She has co-developed national AI strategies across Africa and contributed to AI policy in Sri Lanka, while also consulting for global institutions including the World Bank and serving as an expert to the OECD AI Policy Observatory.

As the AI Ethics Summer School continues, we look forward to the insights and perspectives she brings to the programme.

The future of Artificial Intelligence in Africa requires responsible leadership, ethical frameworks, and policy-driven innovation.

Today, the AI Ethics Summer School 2026 by the Pan-Africa Center for AI Ethics begins.

Over the next four weeks, students, researchers, policymakers, and technology professionals will come together to explore the ethical, social, and governance questions shaping the development and deployment of AI in Africa.

The programme will go beyond principles to examine what responsible AI looks like in practice, including:

• The implementation gap: Where AI ethics commitments fall short, and why.

• Governance in Africa: What post-Kigali commitments mean in practice.

• Power & accountability: How state and corporate power shape AI governance.

• Who controls AI: Questions of sovereignty, infrastructure, security, and intellectual property.

Through expert perspectives, critical conversations, and practical case studies, participants will engage with the realities of AI governance and the choices shaping Africa’s AI future.

Over the coming weeks, we will learn, question, exchange perspectives, and move from principles to practice.

AI can help you brainstorm ideas, improve your writing, organise your thoughts and even produce a complete piece of work in seconds.

But there is a difference between using AI to support your work and using AI to do the work and presenting the result as entirely yours.

Before you submit AI-generated work, ask yourself:

1. Did I actually contribute to this work?

If you cannot explain the ideas, arguments or information in the work without relying on the AI, you may not truly understand what you are submitting.

2. Does the institution, organisation or client allow AI use?

Different schools, workplaces and organisations have different rules around AI.

Check the expectations before you use it. Using AI when the rules prohibit it can turn a convenient shortcut into an academic, professional or ethical issue.

3. Have I checked what AI gave me?

AI can produce incorrect information, made-up references, biased conclusions or statements that sound convincing but are simply wrong.

You remain responsible for what you submit, even when AI wrote it.

4. Am I being transparent about my use of AI?

If disclosure is required, disclose it.

Using AI responsibly includes being honest about where and how you used it.

AI is a tool. It can support your thinking, but it should not replace your responsibility for the work.

The question isn’t simply, “Can AI write this?”

The better question is:

“What is my responsibility for what I submit?”
