LAMATA continues to make important strides in public transportation across Lagos, including the operation of the Blue Line and the expansion of the Red Line, alongside efforts towards cleaner and more efficient transport systems.

As part of the Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy’s sustainability tour series, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, led a delegation including Dr. Debola Odunsi and members of the OCCE team to LAMATA, where they met with the Managing Director, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, and members of the team.

The engagement provided an opportunity to introduce DecarbonIQ™ and discuss how organisations can strengthen the way they capture, manage and report ESG and climate data, while using better data to support decision-making and access emerging climate-finance opportunities.

The visit also builds on LAMATA’s participation in the Lagos State delegation to COP30, with discussions now underway ahead of COP31 on opportunities to deepen collaboration and showcase Lagos as Africa’s subnational climate hub.

Last year, the Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy partnered with Onigbongbo LCDA through EcoCirculate, bringing residents into conversations around better waste management and the opportunities that exist within the circular economy. The engagement recorded strong participation and provided an opportunity to demonstrate how better waste practices can also create environmental and economic value within communities.

The LCDA’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable development and economic growth was recognised at the Leadership Award and Recognition Night of the Climate Finance Preparedness Clinic, where Onigbongbo LCDA received a Leadership Award.

At the invitation of the Chairman, Hon. Moyosore Adebanjo, Mrs.Titilayo Oshodi was received at the council, where she formally presented the Leadership Award to the LCDA. She also shared the Office’s impact report, highlighting EcoCirculate and other flagship initiatives across Lagos.

The visit provided an opportunity to build on the relationship established through EcoCirculate and explore new areas of engagement ahead of COP31, with the shared goal of showcasing the work being done across Lagos to advance climate action and the circular economy.

OCCE is proud to foster strong partnerships with local governments that are committed to supporting sustainable development and economic growth across Lagos.

A bank’s existing client portfolio can be more than a lending relationship. It can also be an entry point into climate finance.

At the Climate Finance Preparedness Clinic, Dr Jubril Adeojo, CEO of SMEFUNDS Capital, looked at how financial institutions can put different green finance options to work, including sustainability-linked finance, climate SPVs, carbon-backed facilities, guarantees and blended finance.

Using manufacturing companies as an example, he also showed how banks can work with developers to finance solutions such as solar and energy efficiency for businesses they already serve, using the financial information and relationships they already have.

The session offered a practical look at how banks can better understand the opportunities and risks around climate finance, and use what they already have to help more climate solutions get financed.

Climate finance requires financial institutions to approach financing in ways that go beyond traditional banking models.

In this session at the inaugural Climate Finance Preparedness Clinic, Dr Adebola Odunsi, CEO of Carbonivity, spoke about the role of banks in building a stronger climate finance system. He discussed sustainable-linked financial instruments, the need for intentionality within financial institutions, and how financial products can work together to support climate finance.

The session also highlights the need for financial institutions to understand the opportunities within climate finance and develop approaches that can better respond to them.

The Climate Finance Preparedness Clinic was convened by the Lagos State Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE) under the theme, “Mobilizing Local Finance to Unlock Nigeria’s Climate Economy.”

Green finance can take different forms.

Green loans. Sustainability-linked loans. Climate guarantees. Parametric insurance.

At the Climate Finance Preparedness Clinic, Adégbòyèga Adébàjò of Amethyst and Ashlar Advisory took participants through how financial institutions can structure these products, using examples from the Nigerian market.

He also highlighted an important part of the process that can easily be overlooked: verification. For climate finance products to gain the confidence of investors and meet international requirements, there has to be evidence behind the claims being made.
